Photobucket Update

It's not ideal, but if you come across a link to PhotoBucket that isn't working, you can right click on it and then click Open Image In New Tab or similar. Not the open link, but open image. It works in Chrome anyway.

Wow, so there is hope (at least for now). You're right, they still work, but still a major pain in the ass!

I'm with [MENTION=44220]BigFishAllDay[/MENTION] , there is no way I'm going to 1) download my photos from PB, 2) transfer to them to another service (even that isn't guaranteed, in a few years the same thing may happen to them), 3) go to every thread I posted and redirect my pictures???........

EDIT: not working (right click) on some photos. urghhhhh

It sucks hard. Millions of photos linked via forums are gone. Such a shame. Some are saying to migrate to Imgur or Flickr, I dunno, who is to say that same damn thing will happen to them? If you head over to photobucket's facebook page, it's full of very angry comments. I'm willing to bet they are going to reverse this. Nevertheless, you can STILL see the pics!!

I downloaded the pics off of my free PB account when they started randomly disappearing last week. Completely hit or miss. The downloaded pics retained the last part of the address (dunno what it's really called) so I was able to quickly-ish find and replace the pics in my build thread. Most pics I've posted all over can also be found in there anyway.

My husband was paying a little for extra storage for his account- some of his pics disappeared off the forum today. He's gotten some of his albums downloaded, I think he's down to one and that's taking a long while.

I'll have to look into Imgur or Google or something to continue the story, will admit to being rather gun-shy at the moment. :wacko:


Truly thankful to those of you who can find the time to get your threads even partially back up or at least continuing from this day forward. You've been so helpful to all of us with your information, thoughts and ideas. Starting from semi-scratch (the words are still there!), well, worse things have happened.

I'm just guessing but I believe with 99% confidence that Photobucket ran out of cash and was sold. The new owners instituted this to random out money with no regard at all for users or long term viability. They want the money and that's it.

Imageshack started breaking about a year ago and they raised their prices though the roof. It was a huge effort but I was able to get all my main thread pics of and over to imgur.

Wow, this sucks! I've been paying for the "upgraded" Photobucket account for a couple years now, but it's just the base plan. There is no way in hell I'm going to pay $400 to keep my photos, or go through 138 pages of pictures to relink them. I hate to say it but once they cut me off my build thread is done. :mad:
 
I think Google stores archive versions of websites. I wonder if there's a way for people with huge threads to find an archived version of their page and save it as a webpage somewhere else for reference. But maybe the pictures would still be linked 3rd party.
 
So it looks like the "free" subscription includes up to 2gb before you are then required to become a paying member. It says no 3rd pty image hosting until you hit the top tier of their paid membership ($400!) but I still have unbroken links to my free account and I'm at 1gb storage, basically not many pictures. Can anyone else that this policy change didn't affect confirm if they have less than 2gb of used storage? Just curious of there is a way to stay under the radar without having to switch image hosting sites in the near future.

Here's the pricing info straight off their website:

It's not a long term for for a service that might go away for lack of money (looking at you, PB!), and it doesn't help me while I'm using Firefox, but it might help get through a build thread quickly.

Today I manually rehosted [MENTION=44220]BigFishAllDay[/MENTION]'s trans cooler install photos to imgur, and it was a pain. Hopefully a way to automate and spread around the photo hosting will pop up soon too.

Works on Chrome on my computer!! I'd suggest that anyone with a big build thread go through ASAP and save each page as a complete webpage and store it on your computer. Then you'll at least have it as reference for the future if you find some way of getting it back up on the net.

Didn't realize this thread was here or I wouldn't have started the other one in General Discussion.
Like a lot of you, I'm on several forums and while many of them have dwindled slowly due to related Facebook groups having more activity, there is a ton of archival data on those forums that will be lost. This genuinely upsets me, I rarely wish failure on anyone but I hope this shuts down Photobucket.

It's strange though that their policy officially states the only way to keep things up is to pay the $40/month and YET you are on one of the lower plans and your pics remained up.

So it seems like only those who were on completely free plans are affected for now.

I'd like to know what happens if BFAD or someone else pays for the cheap $5/month plan. Will the pics that were already uploaded be unlocked?
 
I have very little on photobucket but it's the only service I've used to post pics here besides the ones I upload myself. I only have a few write-ups here but all the pics are still there (for now). I wonder if it's just affecting people who have lots of storage with them?

Edit: Oh, and I don't pay anything.

That brings up an interesting point. I have paid their lowest rate for a couple years now (I was exceeding their bandwidth limit), as a paying member of their site if I uploaded a picture (during that time frame) and posted the picture in the same time frame (via 3rd party), I technically paid to have that picture be where it is and be viewable on the internet.

It seems to me that if they drop my pictures I should be able to get a full refund of all the money I gave them, I paid for a service at a given time and you can't take that back. That would be like buying a 100,000 mile warranty on a car up front, and a year later the dealership saying that they changed their mind and there is no warranty, and you can't have your money back. I would think there could be serious legal repercussions for pulling that crap on thousands of people.

I guess we'll see what happens but I have a feeling when I don't renew my membership that my pictures will go away too.
