First of all thanks for the pics.

Secondly, I learned back in 1999 NEVER EVER to trust what a Toyota rep say...they are uninformed, dont care to accurately check your inquiry and simply cannot know everything about all the various toyota vehicle and options offered on each. When shopping for my 1999 they told me that the button on the LTD was nothing more than a simple way to engage 4WD rather than puilling the lever like on the SR5 and Highlander models. Little did I realize what "multi-mode" really was and its benefits. Shortly thereafter I found VMags 4R Forums and found out the real difference. Dont make the same mistake. There is NO center diff on the SR5 and TE for the 5th Gen.

I agree reps aren't the most reliable sources of information. That's why I said I hoped he knew what he was talking about. He said information is just now being released because Toyota kept all the information under wraps. He did at least have the initiative to call and later find me to tell me what he found out.

I'm simply passing along what I was told because there seems to be a great deal of interest in the topic. I read in the Edmunds forum that they're requesting clarification from Toyota about this. It'll be nice to hear the official company response.

Actually, I was the one who asked the Edmunds moderator to ask the editor to ask Toyota for clarification. Whether Edmunds' editor actually does ask Toyota for clarification and then receives a sensible answer is anyone's guess.

M1911 (and other interested peeps), i emailed the editor at Edmunds and got a response earlier today that confirmed, in short, no center diff for the SR5 & TE, meaning significant driveline lock on high-traction surfaces in 4H...

i followed up for permission to post his full reply here but haven't heard back yet. he did say that a letter-writing campaign may not be a bad idea...

First of all you dont need to read it or ask a rep, just look at the shifter handle, its H2, H4, N and L4 thats it...clearly part time 4WD as in no 4HF mode.

Secondly the transfer case is the VF2A TRANSFER part time single pinion planetary 2.566 low gear case ala the 1996 4Runner "BACK TO ITS ROOTS". No need to wait for Edmunds to confirm or anything else, its a done deal Part Time only for 2010 TE and SR5. :dammit:

Take a closer look, the X is at the rear wheels and not the center diff position. That is the rear locking diff button. No model of the 5th gen has a center diff locking/unlocking specific button.

you are absolutely 100% correct, J.A.: it is the VF2A transfer case. the only thing to "confirm" (so to speak) was that Edmunds had originally reported that there was in fact a center diff in the SR5 and TE. that statement was redacted shortly thereafter.

all this teeth-gnashing is just a matter of us "snow-season" drivers hoping upon hope that Toyota didn't "leave us out in the cold" by removing a key capability from the 5G. but they did. :redbrick:

Hey I was hoping as well as I would love to have something to replace my aging 1999 with. I am still holding out hope for the mid-gen refresh. I was under the impression that the VF2A transfer is a part-time ONLY 2-speed transfer case as opposed to the VF4BM transfer which is full-time transfer case consisting of a torsen limited slip center differential
