Kinda of a gumbled up post of thoughts and questions....sorry....

Curious as to the O/R capabilities of my '00 locked limited.....pics, personal experiences, ect.....she is bone stock sitting on 265/70/16's.....eventually I'd like to have a mildly more aggressive look with a SS 1.2 or maybe just a 1" body lift to get next size up tires(?)......seems OME gets a lot of positive feedback too.....for a while i thought that meant Original Manufactuer Equipment.....DUH!.....getting ready to sell a stock 97 with 355k so I know how great these truck are and don't wanna mess up a good thing....just want something that looks a little stronger and provides a little more OR capability if needed.....for the forseeable furture she will be a weekend family vehicle, camping and pavement queen...

Planned mods that I will do when the exsisting needs replacment

191mm tundra upgrade, heard the 231's were very tight fit....right?
Replacing radiotor, and/or installing dedicated tranny cooler
Constant 12v and 120 adapter
If I plan on replacing shocks all the way around I should upgrade the coils....right? If I choose the Billsteins so many are talking about with the tundra or LC coils will this provide me with a small lift to get one size larger tire?..

.I am over loading my self with reading all these mods and upgrades and getting confused I guess.......basically I want a truck with a little more than stock look without sacrificing durability, low maintinace/parts longevity, and ride, nor getting into welding brackets and extending lines, ect......while giving me a nice look and OR capabilities increased.....or should I just be happy with it for now?

Thanks,

Anthony

A stock runner is pretty amazing by itself. Try having fun with it as it is and then you can decide what needs to be upgraded.

For example I take mine out to the desert al the time and the stock ride height gives very little wheel travel before you are bouncing off your bump stops and that is VERY harsh. So a good lift for me was required pretty quickly. But maybe normal back road travel wouldn't need that or wouldn't need more than an inch or so.

I first upgraded tires and wheels. Wheels are for looks only but tires for better offroad use. And that immediately gets rid of the grocery getter look :D (Ironically I hate my wheels and am now thinking about changing them after everything else is taken care of D'oh!)

I'm a bit of an oldie and this is my third truck so I knew mostly what I wanted to do with it up front and got a quick start with my '14 with rack, tires, sliders, bumper... But other things like the rear trailing arms/skids were from going on outtings with groups of people and seeing what issues they had and preemptively taking care of it.

Upgrading tire size from 265 to 285 (or whatever) is going to be one of the LAST things I do. That would only be /necessary/ for some pretty extreme offroading. I mean I've done some amazing offroading with my 265's and not yet really felt the need for the issues that 33's would cause (yet).

When I bought my 98 it was completely stock. To this day I still classify it a "stock" because I haven't done anything to the suspension. This is what it looks like today. I was playing around with my locker a bit on a dirt mound.

This thing has taken me everywhere I've wanted to go "stock", and I daily drive it. Go test it out a bit before chucking a bunch of money at it. I bet you'll be surprised.

Basically, the only off-road limitations for a stock 4Runner (unless you are planning to do serious rock crawling) is the ground clearance and tires. Add a couple of inches of lift and some good AT tires and it'll do about anything you want it to do. Other additions are for more durability/reliability (and these are really maintenance items), recovery (like a winch), and protection (like rock sliders). My 4Runner is really just a stock 02 Limited with a lift and tires. (But then I don't consider most 4Runners as 'builds' - I 'built' a 65 Mustang a few years ago that was a rotisserie restoration, with a 4.6L DOHC supercharged Cobra motor, all new aftermarket suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, etc. - that's a 'build' - my 4Runner is just a stock truck with a few bolt-ons).

Hey bud, in my humble opinion unless you are a hardcore or'r , a set of32 tires on stock rims will take you 90 percent of where you wanna go especially if you are locked.

That said, I live in a region of Canada with the shittiest roads you have probably ever seen, terrible winters, and do the occasional muddling. Bone. Stock. Although, I have a 99...tallest ride heigh from factory that year.

I plan on lifting about an inch and a half in the next year, not as much out of necessity as it about running heavier bumpers....because shitty winnipeg drivers keep smashing my truck while she is harmlessly parked!!!!

All the best!
