That doesnt look too bad, and vinyl is a much better option than plasti dip. Less messy, less work, it looks cleaner, etc.

Not trying to create conflict, but I am unsure of what your experience using plastidip is and I am not expert have only used it a handful of times.
But from my experience it is super easy to use and have never seen any adhesion issues even with use on chrome.
Either way I think its a cool look, Plastidip is much cheaper and from my experience not difficult to use and easier then paint.

Plasti dip has its place and btw I saw it mentioned in an earlier post, plasti dip is paintable.
I don't have any on my truck but I have used it on other things. I sprayed my cell phone with it instead of buying a cover.
If you're thinking of spraying part of your hood, go for it. You can apply it just as fast ss putting the vinyl down and do it much cheaper. You could even make it the color of your choice by spray painting the plastic dip.
Like mentioned before spray your coats quickly and spray your paint right behind the plastidip if you want a color. Then get the tape off before the plastidip dries. Experiment to see what the drying time is before you start.

I have only just experienced plasti dip by doing my eblems (not shown in photos). I like how some people are on board and some are against it, the reason I would only do it with plasti dip is because I might leave it on for a few weeks to try it out and if I dont like it down the road could remove it in a matter of minutes, the glory of plasti dip is it is only temporary.

Thats a good point. I wasnt really thinking temporary. In fact I was thinking the opposite. For a long lasting durable finish, plasti dip is not a great option. Like you said its temporary (would probably start to look pretty beat up after a few years). But just to experiment for the look I see how its a good option. Then if op liked the look he could always do vinyl or have it painted professionally. Everything Ive used plasti dip on I sanded and primed first. Ive never used it on a painted surface. So I wonder about the affects it would have on the paint. For example will it potentially damage or dull the paint? Will it take bits of the clear coat off when its peeled off down the road?

You will find that alot of overland vehicles have their hoods blacked out. The idea is to minimize glare by using a matte black finish or vinyl on the hood. Its so that when driving all day in the sun or using roof auxillary lighting you wont get alot of glare. Since you have a non scooped hood I would suggest this: Crawlorado: 4Runner Hood Blackout. These guys make great products and personally its not that expensive. It wont possibly damage your hood like plastidip and it looks great. All in all, I would like to see what you end up doing.

would it cause any damage to my hood? I pride myself on how clean my runner is, its got 234K and is in better shape then most cars with 50K

There is no way plasti dip will damage your hood, I've painted the trunk lid on my Audi, wheels and grill in my Audi, both bumpers, bumper cap, wheels, fender flares, grill on my Chevrolet 2500HD, the grill and all the emblems on my 4Runner.
The stuff peels right off when you're ready to remove it, yet it's durable enough it won't wear off from every day use. I've even used automatic car washes and the stuff still looks good.

This is the perfect time and place for plasti dip because painting the hood is permanent. Plasti dip peels off of he either doesn't like it or decides to sell the vehicle, it's a lot easier to sell a stock looking vehicle than a modified one.

Im curious, how many of those applications you showed are painted surfaces, and on how many of them have you removed ALL of the plasti dip to know that NONE of the paint was damaged?

All of them minus the 4Runner since I still own it. I removed the plasti dip when I sold the vehicles.

I think you're talking about Fonzie's flat black plasti dipped S4? It's a B8 and it's worth way more than $40,000
