Plasti-dipping interior trim

My 96 Limited is black with tan "oak" interior. Since I want a more rugged look than luxury, I decided that all the fake wood trim on the interior needed to go bye bye. I've used Plasti-Dip before with good results, and I figured it would look nice if the HVAC surround and switch covers were black with a finish that's somwhere in between matte and satin...instead of the cheesy gloss wood look.

I started today, and HUGE TEASE....i don't have pics yet. lol. But it turned out real nice, and I'll post the pics tomorrow.

Cool, looking forward to pics...but i thought you were referring to the dash board itself!

Wow man this came out really nice! I like how you just went and did this and let everyone know in the end, it can get tiring waiting for 10 completion impressions at any time. You're making me go outside and check out all my stuff...I thought you were talking about the dash as well haha
 
Wow, that looks great! So, what prep did you do? Also, is this just the regular plasti-dip in an aerosol can?
 
Wow, I never thought of doing that. Looks good. That's the stuff that you dip pliers into and it forms plastic-coated handles, right?

Is that how you did the piece in the picture? I always thought the coating would come out too think. Do the pieces fit back into place without any issues now that they have a rubber coating on them?
 
Wondering if you could do a test for us and dip a random piece of plastic(not off your truck) and see how much abuse itll take before flaking/cracking. It looks really good but not too practical if it can take years of abuse imo. Thanks for the pics!
 
I've often thought the 4th Gen's had much nicer interiors. The center console especially. The finish used there is the faux leather look, with the textured, "softish" feel. Any way to replicate that?

just coat it in bedliner then ;)

No prep, except for wiping the pieces down with a dry rag to make sure they are clean. Yes, regular Plasti-Dip in an aeresol can.

It sprays very much like regular paint. You have to put each coat on a little thicker than regular spray paint, because the rubber doesn't adhere to the surface...it adheres to itself and congeals. So you have to get enough on to where it gels together.

But no, it's not too thick at all. I did 3 coats on the switch covers, and just 2 on the HVAC. The switch covers will take more abuse. I think it will hold up good...but time will tell.

I've used it to black out grill emblems before, and the emblems hold up through bugs, rocks, car washes, winter, summer, unicorns, you get the picture.

It's pretty durable stuff. If you intentionally scratch it with your fingernail or something you could damage it, but I have high hopes for it holdin up well on these trim pieces.

How is it holding up?
 
It's doing great, with one exception. The drivers door switch cover was broken before I ever even plasti-dipped it. The back clip that holds the rear part of the cover down is broken off. So the back edge of the cover is always kind of floating around in the air, I push it down all the time, and have to hold it down when using the window buttons so I don't pull the whole thing out by accident.

Anyway, because that edge has been exposed, it started to peel away from a corner. The rubber of the plasti-dip is still solid...it's just coming off the switch cover. I ordered a whole new switch cover two days ago, I want it to be fixed before my brother takes delivery of the truck.
 
And just to clarify, this can be removed without damaging the underneath surface if it doesn't work out, correct?

Great. I don't even own the truck anymore, but when I was in Colorado in February visiting my brother, I saw the inside of the 4runner, and it looks great still.

100% correct. Plasti-dip doesn't adhere to the surface you put it on at all. It adheres to itself. So you have to make sure you get all the way to the edges, etc...otherwise it will start to peel. But it peels off plastic very cleanly and easily. DON'T sand before you apply it, apply it straight over the glossy surface.
