Please recommend a trans cooler

As Scarlett said, "As God is my witness, I will never go hungry, nor will I ever have to take a stinking, rotten, milkshaked transmission out of one of these 4Runners again." Been a long time since I've seen the movie, but I'm pretty sure that's exactly what she said. What a PITA! 5 hundred nuts and bolts and a shopping cart full of odds and ends, and a bad back. Never again!!! So I want a oil cooler to eliminate the factory cooler. I was looking at the Mishimotos. Fan cooled or not? Seems to me the fan would insure better cooling, or would it? Do I have the room for the fan cooled? What brands have you used with success? I haven't even got this damn thing out yet, but I want to line something up before I reinstall. 1999 2.7L 4WD. TIA.

there is already a fan on the engine that will do a fine job so no additional fan should be needed. (unless there is something unusual about your build).
You can get either a Hayden or B & M cooler. DO NOT get a tube cooler get a "plate" cooler they cost a little more but are worth every penny

I know you know this but to make sure you do it right, the hot fluid must enter from the bottom barb and exit out from the top barb.

Long TrueCool 4490 Cooler here-- this is the absolute biggest unit you can fit, i'm pretty sure. I had to squeeze it in meticulous, but it works without any modifications or fab work.

Edit-- I've ran it 1.5 years. No issues at all.

Ran it in SERIES with the factory cooler on my new radiator. I cannot get the trans temps over 180 degrees, no matter how hard I try. It is stout.

I love my TrueCool. And Longs made the coolers for most other company selling them. Now Dana owns Longs.

I had to relocate the horn on my install.

You're correct, it does have a fan already, but I will have to mount it in front of the AC condenser. Any problems with that? I will look into the ones with plates. Thanks.

Keep the stock cooler and add an external unit as well as an inline filter such as a Magnafine. here is Timmy's super to follow install video;

Transmission Cooler Install with Radiator and Thermostat Replacement - YouTube

Well, the stock cooler is what worries me. The OEM radiator failed at the connections, but I don't know what caused that. I put an after market on it 5 years ago. My 2000 so far has been fine. I will put a cooler on it too. It has over 200k on it and I'm not sure if I can trust it.

I installed a B&M 70264 about a month ago. It's the bigger of the two choices from B&M that most use for this mod.

It's twice as thick, but the face of it is more narrow. This one is rated at 14,400 BTU versus the 13,000 BTU of the smaller version, B&M 70268.

I had to remove the horn on that side to get it to fit, but I was planning on tossing the factory horns and relocating the mounts for an upcoming mod anyway. If you want to keep the horn there, there was another thread where someone mentioned they just bent the bracket forward to get it to clear successfully.

No problem with that as long as it does not interfere with the AC High pressure line that crosses from the lower left to the dryer. that should be around 4" total thickness.

additional vibration is induced because of the fan, so i would provide positive mounting brackets to hold the cooler in place instead of zip-tying it through the condenser and radiator

I installed a Tru Cool 4589 rated for 21K BTU's. Amazon.com: Long Tru-Cool LPD Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler 4589 24,000 GVW: Automotive I had to remove the hood latch support in the center to install it and bend the horns slightly, but it clears everything and has a nice large surface area for cooling. For those of you concerned about it cooling too much it has a built in fluid bypass that acts like a thermostat but based on fluid viscosity not temperature. (Hotter fluid is thinner than cold fluid.)

Hayden 699, it's big, I made brackets for it, but I also installed a fan for it a bit of fab work. Fan on at 185 and off at 165 with manual on too. Overkill, yes but ther is no kill like overkill. Bypassed the stock cooler as that is a weak link period. If I have a too cool issue in severe winter conditions I can toss a piece of cardboard over it and be done.

Edit to add - I ran the B&M cooler but it didn't make the cut for me, I wanted a fan and more cooling capacity. I didn't want to take it out, so I flushed it, then made it a power steering cooler, there is where it works perfectly. One day I'll remove it to replace the a.c. condenser.

I used the same. Used the brackets that come in the kit instead of the zip ties through the AC condenser.
