please wear seatbelts

this is 3rd gen related, sadly.

yesterday while driving home from taking grandkids to school came on a wreck, a rolled 3rd gen 4runner on hiway. When I saw it , it was destroyed and not a single piece of unbent metal, personal possessions all over the road. It looked like it rolled several times, but actually looked pretty solid

Sadly, the driver was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected, died at the hospital. 36 years old male

so please where your seatbelts

if a friend or family member is on this forum, I am sad for the loss of your loved one

Really sucks to see stuff like this…

You don’t have to tell me twice about the seat belt, I feel very vulnerable without one.
 
I feel naked and naughty without one on!

Oh yeah and don't forget to ask/buckle up yourself when in the backseats too.

Not wearing a seatbelt is about like not wearing a helmet on a motorcycle or bicycle.

And incredibly stupid thing to do, in any of those cases.

There are risks. Mitigate those risks by doing things that are cheap (or free) and easy. It's real freaking simple.
 
I was in a wreck 5 years ago in January with a 91 Camry. It was that winter that it stayed 0 degrees for like a month. Anyways, someone had sun in their eyes and pulled out right in front of me. I was going 35 mph and tried everything to stop but just too close. Without a setbelt. I would have seriously got hurt as I had bruises from the belt for about a month. Took me 4 months for fully recover from shin and muscle damage. I probably would be be dead. Wear the selt belts as your life depends on it because it does.

There's always those stories of people being ejected from a vehicle, which saves their life because the vehicle then bursts into flames, rolls off a cliff etc. I guess that's what keeps them from doing it. Really sad to hear when it goes wrong though.

I’d estimate that for every 10 stories I hear where someone is ejected, the person dies in 7 of them. Their own car often gets them. Sad to hear about this.
 
Driving along the highway saw a sign to buckle up and wear seat belts few days back.

I thought this was common practice and a redundant sign in this day and age but i suppose not.

Sad thing really..
 
For those with some girth; I found an extender site. A little spendy compared to ebay and amazon but they actually fit and work. Mine came in the other day. I like the rigid 7" style. Yeah, I know, that's what she said too.

Seat belts? Breathing? Yeah... basic.

What may not be is these vehicles. They handle quite well in mud, gravel, terrain, etc. The things that cause that also cause a greatly elevated chance of rollover.

Drive 'em easy, pplz. Ferraris, they aint ,)

Nice extenders. How you wrote that is priceless. I would rather see people use extenders then not use a seat belt. :]

Ugh, yeah. Seatbelts are such a basic item.

Also keep in mind that seatbelts wear out over time: When we bought our T4R with 340k miles on it the first step was replacing the seatbelts and we went OEM not some unknown aftermarket.

My seatbelt has saved me in some prior accidents and I can't imagine not wearing it. I have a general rule for passengers; First, if you don't like how I'm driving let me know and I'll adjust to make you more comfortable. Second, I'm not moving until your seatbelt is on.

It's not MY driving I don't trust, it's all the other idiots on the road.

And yeah I've made plenty of mistakes driving so I'm sure I fall under the "other idiot" category sometimes.
 
Dang hate to hear stuff like that. I remember as a teenager thinking I was bad ass not wearing my seatbelt. Luckily I was never in an accident. That frontal lobe finally matured and I realized how dumb I was.
 
Excellent Reminder.

These are pretty narrow, tipsy SUVs.
Always buckle up and don't leave the driveway until your passengers have done the same.

It's often not your own mistakes on the road that cause a rollover, but some other jack-A - Cant risk it!

No idea how much you spent on yours, but this is from Toyota's website:

"If you have trouble latching the seat belt or don't have enough belt material to move around with the belt on, please make an appointment to visit your local Toyota dealership with the vehicle. Seat belt extenders range from 6 to 18 inches, in increments of 3 inches. The dealership will take measurements while you are seated in the vehicle and then order the seat belt extender from Toyota at no charge."

According to this, extenders are free from Toyota. The above statement isn't vehicle or age limited from what I can see.

Well, the nearest Toyota dealer to me is an hour away, but it would be cool if they gave them away for free. Hard to believe they would do that for a 20 year old vehicle but they might. I'd spend more in gas to go there twice than the $20 for this one.
 
Call them and check. Maybe they'll ship them. With a safety item like this, I think it's a matter of addressing injury liabilities for them. You know, "The seat belt doesn't fit me." "Well then, you're gonna have to drive without one." That conversation isn't going to happen, especially over a $30 extension. I think I recall seeing this same statement from them in owner's manuals decades ago. Toyota seat belt latches are probably unchanged forever, and that's the only fitment needed.
