PO installed aftermarket alarm that overrides autoLock doors

I got my 06 4 Runner about a year ago from a dealer hook-up i had (got it for cost).

The auto lock feature makes me crazy due to my garage situation and my 7 yr old daughter.

I think the previous owner had some sort of aftermarket alarm installed (a toyota mechanic actually pointed this out). There was a wiring harness connected to the wiring around the dash fuse box. It led to a harness connector that wasn't attached to anything . i disconnected the harness but whatever was connected, it still over rides the factory auto lock function when you put the car in drive.

I have the car set to lock the doors when it reaches 13MPH ( i might be wrong about the exact speed).
It works when the doors are unlocked and i hit 13MPH.

The problem is that the aftermarket alarm still locks the car as soon as it is taken out of park.
the factory auto lock function works when i unlock the doors after the alarm system locks it.

Also, i tried to test the factory alarm as per the manual and the alarm doesn't work.

I am wondering if there is still something overriding the factory alarm/lock function?
I can't seem to find anything unusual under the hood. There is nothing under the seat.

Or was the factory alarm disabled?

If so, how do you enable it?

If anybody has any aftermarket alarm information and clues as to what they did, i'd appreciate it.

I would get the install instructions for the aftermarket alarm. I would then figure out how the aftermarket alarm knows what gear it's in and disconnect that wire. Test it and see how it functions...

thats the problem. i have no idea what kind of alarm it is and where it would be located. i think the alarm is actually removed and the 4runner's computer might be screwed up.
i don't know...

You might have had a remote start in there... A good aftermarket radio shop should be able to get it all out of there. You want one that services the local dealers.

Why aren't you going to the dealer where you got it?

the dealer where i got it was a VW dealership and is about 2 hours into the middle of nowhere. I did buy the extended warranty so somehow i would hope all this is covered....

i might try another dealership when i am due for my 30k service and see what they say.

the dealer i currently go to wanted to charge me for re-programming the timing for when the car locks itself back up. in otherwords, when you unlock the car with the remote, the car will lock back up if you do not open the door within 30 seconds. i hate that feature and had them change it to 1 min... after some 'discussions' with the service manager....and no extra fees but LOTS of waiting around and headaches...

The door locks have the following setting, all of which can be independent of one another.

Locking:
-Lock when taken out of park.
-Lock when speed exceeds 12mph.

Unlocking:
-Unlock when shifted into park.
-Unlock when key is turned off from the 'On' position.

I don't have owner's manual handy, but to enable/disable each feature, it depends on what you do. Holding down the lock side of the master switch on the driver's door controls the locking features, unlocking side of the master switch controls the unlocking features. Putting the transmission in Park when you go through the procedures enables/disables the locking or unlocking feature (depending on what side of the master switch you hold down). With the transmission in neutral, it enables the speed based locking and ignition key position unlocking.

I had to repeat the steps a bunch of times to mine to lock when I shift out of park. I don't recall it exactly... it's something like hold down the lock or unlock side of the switch, turn the key to 'On' while continuing holding the switch (for five seconds). (If not, maybe it was hold the switch down within five seconds of turning the key to 'On'.) The door locks will cycle confirm that the feature has been enable or disabled.

Thanks but i tried this about 100 times. it didn't work. then took it to the dealer when i was having a service done. That is when i discovered that somebody messed with the factory system. the technician couldn't get it to work and then found the extra wiring harness in there. after that, he wouldnt touch it. i went home, disconnected that harness and still get nothing.

the car is programmed the way i want because...

when i put the car in drive, the doors lock. i will then unlock them. when i hit 12 or 13 MPH, they lock up again.

so the factory specs are set to 13MPH.
but first the aftermarket 'something' is locking it out of park.
also... the aftermarket 'something' i think is why the factory alarm no longer works.

To turn off your seat belt chime in a MY2008 do the following:

1) make sure the trip meter is in ODO mode.

2) turn the key to the ON position (dont start)

3) within a few seconds of turning it to ON, press and hold the trip reset for 15 seconds

4) while holding the trip reset, buckle drivers seat belt

5) odo reading will change to "B-on"

6) press trip reset once to change to " B-off"

Turn off car.

All done!
