Polished SS Cat Back Exhaust Ebay TRD 3 inch Dia.

The UPS driver brought me an early Xmas present. Its a fully polished TRD copy with 3" (2 & 7/8) in some parts). The oval tip is over 4"
Now, before you get out your checkbook theres a hitch.
I bought this because I wanted the Stainless. But... I want it all. I also ordered a Walker quiet flow muffler to get; flow from the increased diameter but almost oem quiet from the Quiet flow reduced sound. I wanted this instead of Borla, Magnaflow or JBA. None of those will have the diameter or sound reduction of what this setup does.
Now another confession. I wanted this and searched a long time. I want quiet and an increase of flow. This setup can accomplish that. I ordered a cat back exrta cab new gen Tacoma. I've done this before. A Supra SS exhaust on a 1jz TT Cressida. You have to make a couple adjustments, weld and retack mounting points.
I left the best news to the end.
I PAID $ 150 BUCKS DELIVERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :jaw drop: 05-09 10 TOYOTA TACOMA ACCESS CAB 4.0L CATBACK EXHAUST: eBay Motors (item 180552851017 end time Sep-24-10 13:41:27 PDT)

Interesting! Let us know how your setup works. I had heard that if you go too big on tubing the exhaust will not scavenge and can cause back pressure.

Sorry I miss read your post. Real large diameter exhaust actually create too little backpressure.. The whole theory here is speed. True, larger diameters carry more volume, but the speed of the exhaust slows down. Thats what a motor needs. Speed, but the best setup is speed and flow.
Think of exhaust pipes in terms of a garden hose. With a smaller hose you have to really crank up the tap to fill a volume (bucket) Granted both small and large get the same amount of volume from the tap(motor) the water will come out the large diameter hose (exhaust) slower but larger can carry a higher volume if you turn up the hose(motor). But, large hoses ( exhausts) can flow a higher volume that small hoses never can with less restriction
Iff (and only if) you increase exhaust diameter and add backpressure to the same level or close to oem you'll retain almost all the speed and make a higher level of performance.
Yes you'll be marginally faster and marginally louder but to get a monster SS TRD look exhaust and alot less noise (thru flow Borla, Magna...) for less than $ 200 (150 + $45) (TRD & Walker Quiet flow) I can live with that

Slick idea. Take some pictures of it once you have it installed, and include any pertinent notes of what you did to make it work. Might become a hugely popular mod for that kind of money!

Final Piece Arrives

The last and crucial part showed up today. Its a high flow SS Cat made by Flowmonster. Now I just need to make sure I have all the miscelaneous gaskets & hangers.
The first thing I need to do is make the O2 mounts. SS pipe doesn't have em'. Not a big whoop but I want this to run right.
So I'll start taking pictures of my OEM POS and then the good stuff along with my re & re as I go here real soon.

If this turns out the way its intended, A sound clip is gonna' sound pretty boring. But thats the reason why I went to all the trouble of searching and matching all the pieces. It "should" be very close to stock at low revs and slightly louder as revs increase past midrange. I'm aiming for reasonably quiet and no mid range buzz/vibrations. anything else will be gravy.

Honestly, It might be anywhere in between quiet/loud. The only way I'm going to find out is to get busy.

I finally found time to finish this! It works great. The sound at idle is a purr, and has a very "TRD" sound. Its got a nice louder purr at low speeds. Say idle to 2500 rpm. But it never noisy as revs increase. And at highway speeds its almost oem. Yes you can detect a hint of exhaust note but it past my wifes "I like it" test.
The difficult part was slicing the rear section to accomadate the over axle and tailpipe to fender/mudflap configuration and re welding it.
It looks freaking GREAT!!!!! The pipe is HUGE compared to my original. I'll post a Youtube here soon.

teasing us he is??? mmmmm :vader: i want to see these pics and i knowit wont sound like anything but i think iwanna here it still

PlCS!!

Yeah I know a pictures worth a thousand words.
My mother in law just had open heart surgery so I drove 300 mi.
and spent the weekend at a hospital so I think I deserve a couple of days. I literally finished welding as I got the call she was going to the ER. Sorry guys, family comes before anything.

If I don't come up with pics in a couple days then you can flog me :whipping2

Sorry to hear about your mother in law. I hope she has great, speedy recovery!

wow 3'' ? say good bye to all your power

The entire "exhaust too big, lose all your power" thing is mostly misunderstood. Horsepower and torque being affected by exhaust have a lot more to do with the header design and restriction in cats/mufflers than the diameter of the pipe.

Until somebody dyno's a 4runner with the 3.4 and stock exhaust manifold with both stock and 3" exhaust I will not believe that you lose power. I would bet $100 the 3" exhaust will gain power with the aformentioned setup.

3" is really not THAT big, considering your applying it to a 3.4L V6 that makes about 200hp.

OP, good luck with the family, best wishes to the MIL. (not the malfunction indicator lamp) :)

Au confrere mon frere. I went thru this exact thing before and learnt my lesson. That's why my pretty polished thru flow muffler is still on he floor in the shop. I went with the Walker oem style muffler so it would return the velocity to stock. Retaining and even gaining torque while making more HP.
I can Roast the tires from idle and modulate the spin rate with the throttle.
I learned the hard way with a SS Gibson catback on a V6 S10. I ended losing low end torque for some high end HP. Now I have still have the torque and increased HP and it's a **** ton lighter to boot.

How's the sound on it?

EDIT - nvm, I saw you described the sound in an earlier post...any chance of getting a video of it?
