Poll: Spidertrax or Gauntlets (or 2014)

OK...so after seeing the 2014 and really wanting one...it has me thinking...

I currently have a 2012 SR5 with alot of mods done to it, to make it 'mine'. I really would like to get a new 2014, but no way will wifey(and 6mo son) approve of the trade/purchase toward a new T4R.

That leads me to thinking of adding a little something extra to the current 4R.

I've been debating between a set of Spidertrax Spacers($200) with stock wheels, or some black Ultra Gaunlets($600). I'll be keeping the 265/70/17 AT3 tires.

Just curious to anyone's thought or opinion either way??

Your truck is one of my reasons for the post. Looks great. I just worry mine won't look "as good" since it's an SR5, and I don't have 285 Duratracs.

If you want your truck to look good, but do not want to buy more aggressive tires, just get gauntlets and if you can spare another 200 for spidertrax then it will look very good. There is one member one here runs 265s with spidertrax and it looks really good.

I love my Gauntlets. I know from reading alot on the forum that people have good luck with Spidertrax spacers. The one big downside IMO is that most tire shops will not work on your rig when you have spacers installed.

Which would then likely mean UCA's.....and yet more money spent.....

Thanks all for the feedback. I have a couple questions regarding these Gauntlet wheels.

1. I'm assuming the 'cheapest' method to buy these is online. Any sites specifically recommended? I found jegs.com to have good pricing, and free shipping.

2. Do I need to order any TPMS sensors or rebuild kit? I saw tire rack has them listed for $230 or so for four.(i doubt i'd pay that) But i've seen rebuild kits for $13 each. I would like to swap my OEM sensors to the new wheels if possible.

3. Could most tire shops, or local 4R dealer install the tires and swap the sensors? What's your going $ rate to mount/balance tires? I hope I don't need any alignment.

Sorry for all the rookie questions, but just trying to make sure I cover all bases prior to ordering stuff.

Call your local shops to get quotes on mount/balance but based on my experience calling around, the local Toyota dealership charges $80 to mount/balance. They throw in some fees to discard your old tires and etc so you're looking at just over $100 all said in done was what I was quoted. For you however, they might charge more since they're swapping tires instead of installing new ones. Same for the TPMS so there might be some added cost. Outside of the Toyota dealerships, other shops in my area want $30-40 per tire mount/balance. Alignments range from $80 at the dealership to $120 elsewhere.

1. I bought my Gauntlets through tirerack, at the time it was the cheapest I could find. $145/wheel (18x9) plus $60 for shipping.

2. You do not need to order the TPMS or a rebuild kit.

3. I had mine swapped and was going to be charged $80 for mount/balance/TPMS swap. (Wasn't charged, not sure why but I was having lift put on plus alignment at the same time)

Any tire shop should be able to do it. If you can find the wheel locally cheaper, a lot of places will mount and balance free of charge but will probably charge for TPMS swap.

I have the spider trax and when I got my Duratracs I went to a local garage and they switched my old wheels and they said nothing about the spacers.

And why can't you get both the Spider Trax and the Gauntlets ?

Hopefully there is no issue, I just ordered 1" spacers from Motorsport Tech.

On that note, when you order your wheels make sure you get the -12 offset as opposed to the +12 offset. I ordered the wrong ones so I have a baskspce of 5.43 and now I am having to spend extra $$ to correct this. :frusty:
