pondering the idea of a v8 3rd gen swap

Not when you consider R&D costs to build a real turbo system. The TRD super charger is a straight bolt on. That STS system sucks since it will have major turbo lag and will only produce power in high RPM. The supercharger is a much better bet since it starts boosting at low RPM.

I don't know about the turbo lag but the article said it virtually had none.

Check out the Dyno sheet

It makes 340 ft/torque at 3900 rpms

It looks totally driveable.

If I had $4000 I would totally turbocharge my 4runner. Oh, the sound of the turbo spooling...

$4k, That is insane. I think you could but a plasma cutter, a mig welder, and a tube bender and build that system cheaper. Boost contollers are cheap as hell and universal turbo kits sell on E-bay for like $500.

Mind you that once it is built and tested, once the crappy ebay turbo wears out, you can step up to brand name and just bolt it in place.

If you were going to spend the time and money for a swap id say a LS1.Awesome hp per $
x2 or the cheaper iron block version LT (or is that lz?)

MHO & EXPERIENCE: If you are looking for offroad performance pumping up the 5vz with aftermarket bolt-on schtuff WILL NOT MAKE YOU HAPPY.

Last year I did a JDM 5vz swap into my 3rd Gen. Had my SC rebuilt by the best, Ed Martinez of PSE Superchargers.
URD pulley, 318cc Bosh injectors, Walbro fuel pump and Mallory regulator, and Iridium plugs.
AEM computer and 3-days of dyno time at Church Dyno down in Long Beach.
LC Engineering plug wires & that intake spacer thingy.
Also have K&N type air-filter w/ custom intake & scoop.
It all goes out headers into 3" Bassani free-flow exhaust with an empty cat.

With new dive-shaft cv and U-joints, 4.11 gears it only dyno'ed at 245hp on a wheel dyno, but feels more like 145hp in the seat of your pants. What a joke and waste of wedding money! Granted my runner is a pig weighing in at 5124lbs, rolling on 285x70x17 rubber and automatic transmission.

If anyone has more information on dropping an LS into a 3rd Gen please post up links.

So much has happened in this thread. Look at my hindsight especially with Clownmeats Build.

Even the hindsight of my build, I would have have never imagined that I would be doing the swap.

wow, good find! That guy needs to post up some tire smoking burnouts.

Not sure that is enough radiator to keep a v8 cool and would also like to see a v8 fit with a front diff (maybe with a dry-sump). I just sold my FUNrunner, it would have been awesome with V8 power, just to heavy for the 5VZ.

Rollin in a 2UZ now. :bluejump:..... but its bone stock :crybaby:

boo...

3rd gens are more capable offroad and I can drop a supercharged v8 in the 3rd gen that would blow the doors off the 4th gen minivans they call 4runners.

I know this post was from 2 years ago, but still funny reading it and then looking left to see your avatar is now a 4th gen.
