if your referring to the style grill that i did then its the 01-02 If you want to do the full satoshi with this grill its gonna take some moderate to hard fab work. Once you cut that center piece out your gonna have huge holes on the sides of the grill.

with what i did, all you have to do is some minor drilling to mount the mesh.

I have that same grille that came on my 99, what year do i get the other style grille from to do the mod like everyone else has?

Those grills are from 96-98s. You can buy a new one from Rockauto or Parts geek for around $50 I think. Or find a used one somewhere.

So I really liked the pictures I saw of the "Satoshi Grill Mod" and decided to do it.

I also recently purchased new headlights, bug shield and corner lights but that will come in another thread.

What I did differently:
* no fiberglass or bondo work; it is IMO unnecessary.
* did not build steel supports for the emblem
* did not build/attach at outer liner for the mesh grill



OLD LOOK




I decided to buy a new grill since the old one was damaged and I am hoping for this mod to last 100k.
The new grill was $82 shipped on ebay.

I bought supplies at home depot; you can probably skip the white paint, I didn't use it.

SUPPLIES




On the first cuts I only intended to remove the center piece. I suggest you use a small hacksaw so that you don't risk damaging the (new) grill. The less damage you do when cutting, the less need for bondo/fiberglass work.

Cut the grill mesh to match outline
No pics of this step. Simply trace out the mesh using a sharpie, then cut. Beware, the mesh is extremely sharp once it has been cut with sheers; I found this out the hard way.

Time to paint the gutter grill. I bought two so that I'd have a backup.

Preparing to attach the mesh to the grill.

For this i drilled two small holes for each spot where i am going to attach the grill. I used black zip ties to attach it as you will see below.

just painted the blaster horn covers black so that you can't see them through the grill.

i would say this mod was not very difficult but very time consuming.

Not quite the satoshi, maybe more of an Ivan Stewart? But eventually ill be doing the whole grill like yalls.

Thanks man, I unfortunately did not take many pics during the process. but it's not too bad. I would rate it about the same difficulty as the projector lights if not easier. but here is the ABS plastic mesh i got

i cant wait to make a satoshi out of it. It may be sooner then I think after seeing all these sweet satoshi grills here!! but for the lower valence, you gotta gut all the vents out and cut a piece from the mesh that fits the valence, then with the grill, again you just cut out 4 pieces that fit in the 4 sections, and mount them in there. I used a combo of zip ties and Epoxy to make it all stay

Finally got the satoshi mod on. Instead of starting a new thread i'll resurrect this one. It went smoothly. Got a couple touch up spots but it works.

Will update with better picture later but you get the idea.

I posted this pic in my build thread but it seemed better suited here. This is a custom fabrication I plan on making out of fiberglass inspired by a combination of the 2012 tacoma grill and the satoshi grill. This is just a sketch but i would love to hear what you guys think. I may end up making a mold so i can make multiples. <br>

Originally I was going to do the bottom part of my mod in black to match the bumper, but time and patience ran thin so I went ahead and sprayed it all the same sunfire red. And will You be making the whole grille or are You going to add that middle piece into the already designed grille for the 4runner? If you're implementing the middle section to the already existing grille, how do You plan to attach it to the very limited durability and room of the factory grille?

I was actually planing on making it a piece that mounted to the factory grill once I have cut out the cross bars and such. It would have a lip, since it would be made like a shell, that would be able to bolt to the factory grill's inner lip. If that doesn't work out the edges fit pretty flush and could be epoxied together. Since it is going to be made of fiberglass it will be pretty strong. I haven't decided if i want to paint the chrome section or not yet. I am going to eventually replace the bumpers and most likely paint them black.
