Knoxville? I figure it that's wal Vol is, several of us around to help if needed

Yup! I live in Knoxville. That's awesome! I probably will end up needing help sooner rather than later so that's good to know! You guys have any meets or anything? I am just now getting into this obviously and not an experienced off-roader but would love to get involved.

Sorry, we only help guys with white 4R's. Lol jk jk, glad to see someone else in Knoxville! Welcome to the forum! I don't think we have any meets planned but I'm sure we can schedule something. Also if you need help with your suspension don't be afraid to ask us, I'm pretty sure we all installed our own suspension ourselves.

I'm just making it easier to point out the newbie! That's awesome- if you guys do anything in the future let me know! Hopefully I'll see you guys around town.

Very nice list, props to you for putting in the work and searching so much. Enjoy the new truck!

If anyone is ever in Atlanta, stop by TRS and look me up too. They have a great facility, good people there. Been using them for years. DDM gets you at cheap, TRS gets you at good. Good and cheap rarely go together.

Can anyone here make a case to buy a low mile 2003 v8 4runner over a slightly higher mile v6 2006 model?

Ive been looking for a while.. I wont tow, the timing belt issue, the lower hp of the v8s, worse gas mileage, 4 speed transmission.. and older look for a 4th gen..

are these deal breakers to anyone?

Hp calculations were changed between 05 and 06 model years.

Price.

Full time awd

No head gasket to worry about.

5 speed tranny vs 4 speed.

Mileage is only 1to2mpg off.

No replacement for displacement.

I went wits v8. Made my own projectors that out perform a face lifted 06 head light every day all day. No worries about 4wd actuator since it's full time 4wd. V8 doesn't seem to struggle for a gear at highway speeds while going thru mountains.

I went with 4th v8 because that's the only generation that had it available. You can't unroll the miles. My 03 just turned 202k. At 65mph the v8 spins a lazy 1800 to 2100 rpm iirc. You can put reverse lights into the rear bumper lol.

All things equal I'd go v8, no tpms, tranny is not sealed, power available if things ever change and you need to tow something once in a while.

can it be argued that the V8 in the 03-04 4runners is the worst engine/tranny combination to choose from of all the 4th generations? or should I say least desirable.. it has 235 HP, compared to the 05-09 V8 that gets 260 HP.. the V6 gets 245 HP.. it has the least horsepower of all the engines and possibly the worse gas mileage.. and the tranny is only 4 speeds... Does any of this really matter?

I've been looking for a 4runner for a while now... tough to come by one thats not beat, and even the beat ones people are asking way over book value.. but I'm not opposed to getting a deal on an older one, or paying up for an 06-08 runner.. Just dont know if im giving up too much here with the drivetrain..

V8 should be 5 speed tranny, that has serviceable fluid in 03.

Like I said hp calculations changed in between 05 and 06 model years. 05 had the same engine as 06 with vvti. Yet hp is higher in a 06.

Anyways, you are like many soon to be 4 runner owners, looking for the right vehicle. It's a rough and tough journey ahead. Good luck in your search, I've been in mine for 3 years and love it every time I get in it!

BTW got mine for $5750 with 164k! No complaints besides I should have bought one sooner lol

Hey t4r lovers. I'd like a rundown on opinions for my rig set up. I know I've asked a couple questions like this before but after taking some great advice and using my truck first to determine how I use it I believe I have a better idea of my expectations. Just to make notice I'm running a 2004 sr5 4spd 4x4 auto v6, so I do have the 390 gears. There for I've got myself into a pickle when originally I thought I was doing myself a favor. I bent my rear axle housing and replaced it with an 07 fj axle with 390 gears but it has a factory e-locker. The wire harnes from low range offroad is on order. Having the thin ring in the diff is a concern. I've heard horror stories of the weakness of these fj rear diffs.
So this is what I'm thinking. From people's reports the 275/70r17 is much easier on the rig than 285/70r17. I noticed a 1mpg difference going from stock tire size to one size bigger 265-70r17s. The 275s are actually less than one more size up. They are 32.3 and only a 1/4" more wide. The 285s are 32.6 and 3/4" inches more wide. I know what to expect out of mpg differences but my question is what about the strain on the rear diff? Say I'm in a scenario where my I'm flexed out, locked center and rear and I need the momentum.
I'm rolling a 2.5 daystar spacer lift now but I plan to bump her up to 3". I want to run ome 885s with some billies and invest more in my 4link. 2" toytec super flex and the toytec adjustable rear links. The 285/70s are not even a 33 but are the too heavy for the weak ring and pinion?
Another ? Is in regurads to the vsc mod. I may want to in some cases have my runner in 2wd with the rear locker enguaged. I read a lot but it seems I can only find info on this mod for 3rd gens and v8s where the wiring seems to be a little different. Is there any info on my particular model? Mine has two plugs going in to the master cylinder. One has 3 wires and the other has 2. How much stress would the rear diff be under if I was doing donuts with the vsc off and rear locker enguaged in 2wd with 285s vs 275s. Thanks everyone and happy 2016.

Since I started searching.. going on 5 months now.. I think I'm starting to realize its easier to find a low mileage V8 than a low mileage V6.. the v8s pop up in the 50-70k range more often.. and the v6s pop up around 90k and up..

I think mainly because people sell their cars when they need timing belts.. and your purchasing it at that point.. V6 they keep driving..

T4R Noob Questions... 3rd gen v 4th gen / 2wd v 4x4 advice needed

:help:

So my 2007 Charger RT engine just blew and I've been looking at 3rd Gen T4R, but not having much success with reasonable mileage / price I'm looking at 4th Gen, but seeing all the Head Gasket issues posted here is giving me some worry...

I found a 2004 Limited 2WD V6 I was thinking about purchasing... then seeing all the issues with the 4th Gen with Head Gasket issues slowing me down...

I live in Nor CA (2 hours from Tahoe...), and this would be my commuter car... Not big into off-roading (I have 2 little ones so wanted to upgrade in size) so 4x4 wasn't a big issue...
Should I wait out a nice 4x4 just for resale value?

Can someone help with what I'm going to be looking at for 4th Gens with < 100k that will need timing belt and water pump replaced.

Am I better off to go with a 3rd gen with ~150k miles v 4th gen <100k?

Going to look at a '06 4Runner Sport this wknd with 135K miles on her. They are asking 14,500 for it, but I don't believe I should be concerned with the miles. Thinking the price may be a bit much, what do you all think? Looks great with the pics online, it's time to get out of my VW. Thanks
