Thanks to all you hardcore 4Runner guys for your DIY write-ups, tips, things to look out for, recommendations on parts, maintenance, preventative maintenance, upgrades and just all around helpfulness to other owners I was able to answer EVERY question I had using the site:toyota-4Runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/ and thus I purchased my 2006 Limited 4Runner today after about a month of snooping around here while I searched for a vehicle. Looking forward to posting more.

Put in neutral and turn dial to 4low and nothing happens. No blinking light, no annoying beep... nothing.
Can anyone please point me in a direction. I have googled the sh@t out of this and had no luck.

Google "4th gen 4Runner actuator" you transfer case actuator is messed up

What ^^^ said. I just purchased a 2003 V8 and put it into 4Lo about a week ago. Although it switched, it's now stuck in 4Lo. I've done everything you can possibly read of on the forums except taking the actuator off and/or dropping the transfer case. Taking the actuator off is probably the cheapest way of rebuilding the unit, but the problem comes with timing the unit once you pull it off. To date, I do not believe anyone has shared any success on properly timing the actuator.
The part you need is AISIN SAT-003. I found it off of Ebay brand new from a vendor but sadly, I purchased his last unit. This was also the cheapest I could find it. My mechanic said Toyota parts quoted him $950. You can search some of the Toyota online parts stores but I have yet to find anything cheaper than $850 bucks.
Your best bet is to purchase the unit, then drop the transfer case and replace the old with the new. If you're not mechanically confident enough to do so, like myself, you can take it to the stealership or find a mechanic to do so.

So I'm looking to buy a 4th gen... I know the 2003 to 2005 v6 have head gasket problems and the v8 have crack manifold problems. Anything else should I look at?

Torn CV joint boots, if 4wd
Bad front wheel bearings
Make sure it will engage in 4LO, if 4wd
Frozen brake calipers
Frame rust
Has timing belt/chain been replaced if the 4R is past the maintenance mileage
Stuck sun roof

I know belt suppose to change around 90k but what about timing chain?

Chain should outlast engine if properly maintained (oil changes). Will stretch a bit (mm's) as miles go up but within tolerance.

I don't see a timing chain replacement in the maintenance manual so that would be debatable.
Some say never replace it.
