Preparing for remote road trip in Quebec

So I was all set to depart tomorrow, and discovered wildfires broke out and the road is closed and towns we were going to are getting evacuated. So I have 9 vacation days and no trip.

So made the call to drive to Newfoundland instead. Doing highway 389 in Quebec to reach Labrador city and do some remote camping out there. Any of you Canada guys familiar with any area out there?

What's the plan? Quebec to Labrador and back, or the full loop which will take you from Lab on to the island via the ferry in Blanc Sablon? If your coming down through Lab and on to the Island I can give you some great camping spots and must sees. You will need to book both the ferry on and the off the island ASAP. I'll check with my buddies who did the full trip on their bikes and see if they have any advice. Got a few friends living in Lab City too that would def. know the places to see and things to do.

It's Canada... Not Abu Dhabi. Contrary to popular belief, we still like you! We have sidewalks, and schools.... And iced cream! The only advice I will give you is never make a right turn on a red... It's illegal! Oh and leave your morals at the border... We don't have them here! Enjoy your trip!

I thought right on red was a Québécois thing. Always pissed me off living in Upstate NEw York when they'd come down and refuse to turn right on our lights.

No right turn on red is Montreal only thing. Rest of Canada allows right on red as far as I know.

Newfoundland is gorgeous. One of the great drives you'll ever experience. You'll love the people, who are some of the kindest you'll ever meet, and have a great accent that, in some places, is so rich you can't understand them, even though, technically, it is English.
Be prepared for a big ferry ride (book ahead) and don't miss Gros Morne National Park.

How are you making out with all the forest fires OP? Lab is in pretty hard shape along with Quebec.

Everything got messed up for my trip... But we still made the best of it. Our original plan to hit James Bay got stalled with forest fires... Then we drove for 2 days and finally 3 hours down rural 389 in QC and hit a checkpoint where they told us the road was closed 60 miles ahead due to a fire that broke out. So, we ended up driving the remote trails up there for 3 days and camped off the grid for awhile. What beautiful land! Then we came down and did some trails and camping along the St Lawrence seaway. Made the best of the situation that we could, although it was discouraging.

You can tell in the one picture below of the the dirt section of QC 389 how the sky and sun changed color with the smoke

Still sounds like a great trip to me! The smoke must have bad up that way. We had low lying smoke all weekend here on the island, which is over 1000 miles away from the fires. Great pics!
