Programming keyless entry but power lock won't lock on third cycle

Hi! I've had 4Runners for 16 years and probably will till they bury me.
I have programmed keyless entry before but this one has me dumbfounded.
When i start the cycle of lock/unlock, it will only lock twice. The third time the drivers door will NOT go down to lock. The others will, but not the drivers door.
At first I thought I must have a short in the locking mechanism, until I tried it over and over and realized it was always doing (or should I say NOT doing) on the third "lock" cycle.
Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know maybe what could be the cause?

I was able to program the remote on the first try after trying at least 20 times using the other methods.

Hi i have a 2001 sport model. Iv tried all of the above (read entire thread) about 30 times now and I can never get the door locks to do a confirm cycle that I'm in program mode or erase mode. So I searched all over my interior and can't seem to find a alarm modual. If I lock the car with me inside and I manually unlock one door and open it the horn/headlight alarm goes off. Only way I can disarm it is too insert key and turn the car on. There is a i-lock sticker on the driver window. Anyone famillar with this? Is it factory or after market? Any help is appreciated iv about given up on it...

Unfortunately, I'm just now finding this thread and the suggestions to use the key to actuate the lock/unlock sequences. Nonetheless, I'll share my experience in case it helps somebody.

I was using the button on the door to actuate the lock/unlock sequence and could never get it into programming mode. I started to wonder if I had the factory installed option for keyless entry. So I called my local dealer and provided my VIN to find out. They said nothing came back except an indication that the vehicle was originally sold out of Canada. Something about TCI (Toyota Canada International). They weren't able to access the information from the states. I called a dealership in Canada and they confirmed that my truck does have the factory installed option.

That gave me hope. I was quickly back trying to get it into programming mode. Eventually I noticed that the door locks on the drivers door stop moving up and down during the 2nd round of 5 lock/unlock cycles. It was as if the actuator gets tired (the key approach that others have been successful with seems to confirm this). In my case, I slowed down all the lock/unlock cycles to where it takes about 2 seconds per lock/unlock. I also waited about 5 seconds after closing the door and before starting the 2nd round of 5 locks/unlocks. I'd recommend trying the key approach instead of my slow it down approach. BTW, the instructions I followed said to use the power lock switch.

This last time I was adding a remote so I did the key on/off sequence twice. It seemed to respond with multiple lock/unlock cycles. The instructions said it would be 1 cycle but it was more. 3 I think.

Lastly, my lock, unlock, and panic now work on 2 new remotes. But the window button has no effect?

I tried these instructions on my 99 4 Runner at first without success. I finally gave up and went to the dealer. The dealer told me that they could not do it either because the actuators in the driver's door and the front passenger door were not working at 100 percent. They seem to work pretty good but, not when you click locks back and forth so much. They estimated about $200 to have new Actuators installed in the front doors. The actuators are the things that actually make the doors lock and unlock when you are using the arm rest lock/unlock controls. I told them I would think about it. When I got home, the actuators on the passenger door seemed okay. I followed the above instructions accept that I used my left hand to manually lock and unlock the door while I simultaneously pressed the lock and unlock controls on hte armrest with my right hand. It worked the first time.

Hi, Recent purchase of a 2002 4R

Got both Oem key fobs but needed new batteries. Went ahead & replaced them. Fobs doesn't work after battery replacement.

Should I go to #6 of the list above or does the whole sequence needs to be re-programmed ?

Hi guys i got 98 4runner with the rs3000 vip alarm and i just got the correct key fob But it only triggers the alarm by holding the top botton and it disarm the alarm but no door locks operation. I could lock and unlock the doors with the switch so i know the door locks are fine. Any ideas? Could it been that i got a bad rs3000 module?

In my case its a brand new remote it came with intruction on how to program the remote but in those intructions there are a few more steps than the one i found in the forum but i have try both of those and nothing and i also erase all the previous remotes of the rs3000 module. I got my a remove before but it was a gray remote and so far what i have search is that i need a black remote not the gray one since the gray one is for 99 and up 4runners. Now with the back one it only triggers the alarm and sometimes it wont do nothing. What im about to do tomorrow would be to check the wires harnes from the rs3000 module and i know my piezo chirp dont work. Wish me luck!

I just took a look on the wiring of the rs3000 and found a gray wire that its been cut or it just hanging and i think thats where my problem is at on why my alarm is not working. Here is a pic of what im taking about

I was having problems with my programming also. What you stated is the EXACT reason why your vehicle will not program. It has a weak door lock actuator. What you need to do is roll your window down, put a spare key into the door keyhole, and cycle the lock/unlock portion of the programming by turning your key. That'll fix the problem.

I accidentally discovered this today.While I was lubricating my ignition with graphite I figured out that if I turn the ignition on then off 5 times real fast I hear a loud beep coming from under the hood.I was like WTF? so here I am wondering if my '97 may have keyless entry.
how can i find out if it does?

You'll have a small black box top left under your hood that works the keyless if you don't have it you never did I guess. I did have a screen shot of it but I'm sure you can Google and find it

Cant enter Programming Mode

Hey Ive tried all these different techniques but I still can't enter programming mode. What do you recommend? I have a 1999 Toyota 4Runner Limited.

Not sure if you were still struggling with this issue, but I had the same problem and I couldn't get my 4Runner into "programming mode" My actuator in the driver door would stop moving the lock on the 3rd or 4th cycle. I ended up doing what a guy mentioned earlier in this thread by just manually pushing down and pulling up the driver's door lock plunger. I DID NOT even press the power doorlock button when doing this, and I eventually got into programming mode and was able to get my key fobs synced. Hopefully that helps!

I got your PM-- Here are the instructions for programming the 99-02 4Runner Keyless Entry factory remotes:

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast.

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

New owner to a 02 T4R SR5 4X4

Short and sweet- came with two keys and no key fobs. Called dealer and has dealer installed RS3200 security system.

Went to dealer and bought the key fob.

The link provided above is the only way I find that puts my 4Runner into programming mode. (Sorry don't know how to make the fancy link thingy)

So I can get into programming mode but the vehicle does not respond at all to the key fob. No unlock/lock cycle at all.

Driving me crazy any help would be appreciated.

Got my freebie junkyard fob working this weekend using these instructions. I tried a couple of weekends ago, but kept getting DENIED on the steps 6A and 6B. Each time it would cycle twice, rejecting the fob. I knew it was sensing the fob because it would cycle, but it jsut didn't like the fob.

I tried again this weekend with the 4C step of turning the ignition on done 5 times, this supposedly clears all the existing fobs from the system. Then started in from the top again.

I still got stuck in a ^A-^B loop though. It kept rejecting the fob. But I kept on trying it, and after something like 6 attempts it finally cycled once, not twice. Fob accepted!

Not sure why I needed to do it 6 times. Perhaps that part about holding both lock and unlock buttons, then immediately pressing just the lock button is more finicky than expected? I was trying some different patterns in holding, releasing, and pressing the buttons.

Anyhow, all's well that ends well. Fob is working perfectly.
