You have the right to insist that they use the oil spec'd in your OM.
If they can't prove to your satisfaction that they are using a quality bulk 0w20 then I would insist that they allow you to watch them put in bottled TGMO or get your money back. I would even agree to pay a little more if necessary.


I wouldn't get crazy about it and insist on new filter or anything, just a drain and fill.

Switching between synth and non-synth is not the issue that people used to think it was.

IIRC. The wear numbers being reported with 0W20 are now worse than "heavier" weight oils.

I would not use a 30wt oil in this engine unless I was really pushing it in offroad or racing situations AND having oil pressure issues.
YMMV (literally).

TGMO is now made by Mobil to Toyota specs but has been made by other mfgs in other markets.
It is NOT Mobil 1.

I have always worried how the thinner oils protect our engine compared to the standard weights, but I heard great things about the TGMO. If you have any good links to share about 0w-20 wear rates, I would like to see them.

For my first OCI I used TGMO 0w-20, because I really didn't want to think about it, I am still debating on what I should use for my 20k OCI.

It is stories like the OPs, that make me bypass those free oil changes, and never take it to a dealer or lube shop to change the oil. There is no way I would let a minimum wage Lube Tech touch my $35k vehicle.

They may have billed for 5w30 but still used 0w20.

It sometimes happens with us. The parts guy bills the wrong oil, but the technician usually always gets the right oil grade in the car. We have bulk pumps that are labeled in the shop so it's fairly simple to select the correct oil (especially if you can read the cap). Meanwhile, the parts dept. really doesn't know what to bill unless we call them up and tell them, or they look at the history and see which oil was billed previously. When we hire a new parts guy, we usually have a few customers concerned that the wrong oil was used.

Oil is supposedly changed with 0w20 synthetic and they ordered another TRD oil cap to replace mine
