I have never done this before. I’ve always owned front wheel drive cars. Is there dust cap on the zerk fittings that I have to remove first before I grease it?
this thread is awesome, thanks for posting![]()

I just purchased a grease Gun from Lock N Lube (The Green One) with a max PSI of 5000. Will that work?
Noticed some of you are using ones that are from 7500 to 8000 PSI.
I grabbed a $10 grease gun a few years back from amazon and it’s working flawlessly when I lube the prop shaft. I didn’t even know there is a psi requirement...

Getting ready to do this again. I've done it once a while back, but can't remember which grease gun I used (I have two). One is SuperLube that I normally use for my UCA and the other is I believe a red grease (mobile or valovline?)
I recall some users here used two different types of grease, but also read that it's OK to use one type. If you were to pick one type, would you go with the red grease or SuperLube for all of them?
Bumping this thread for a question.
I have always greased the propeller shafts every oil change (5k miles). Spider joints until I see grease come out, and 2-3 pumps for u-joints.
I have heard some people over greasing their u-joints and fixing it by taking off the zerk fittings to let grease out. Yesterday I did this on both front and rear because I was curious, but nothing came out.
Is this an indication that I should be adding a little more grease, or are 2-3 pumps every 5k good enough?
You’re not likely to get a consistent answer to this question. It’s definitely not too much. Are you seeing grease come out the seal where the inner and outer portions of the driveshaft meet? If you don’t know, wipe them clean and monitor. If you never see any grease squeeze out of hat area, you’re not getting my grease where it needs to be to properly lubricate.

I think you mean 2-3 pumps for the slip yokes. I give slip yokes 3 pumps and I've never observed yoke movement while greasing. No excess grease has appeared while greasing. No excess grease has been flung out ever. I smear a little bit of grease on the shiny slip surface to help lube the seal lip.
Did you sit on the bumper?
I’ve never taken out the Zerk but I might next time.
The first time I did a lube job I pumped in around 20-30 pumps until I saw it move. When I heard that could blow the seals I reduced it to about 5 or less which still tends to move it a mm or so. I also wipe a small amount on the shiny part like DougR.
This thread on ih8mud goes into much more detail on how to do it right.

I did not sit on the bumper... Figured if there was too much it would come out without any kind of pressure, but based on some of the discussions you linked that reasoning is incorrect. The first time I greased them at 100k (likely never greased before that because it was dealer maintained), I did 10 pumps but did not allow any old grease to come out of the seal.
Might try to pump new grease in and see if any old stuff will come out past the seal. If not, then I will try some of the other options mentioned to "unclog" the seal.
Is the Prop shaft greasing included in any of the dealer provided maintenance package such as 10,000 mile service?
