Q for you V8 owners?

with 265/70R17
I've had my 05' V8 4x4 for a week now. On the trip home running 70 on freeway and 50 on a mountian road I averaged 19.5, got about 325 miles before filling up and had a couple gals left in the tank. In town w/ a lead foot I'm averaging 15.5 or so. I can live w/ that, but still may look into CAI later.
Looks like when driving on the interstate 78 mph I'll be getting 17.5-18 mpg. I also have 265/70r17 a/t tires. I'm happy, although would love a couple more mpg's!

Mine usually says Range 354 when I fill up.
Generally, when the light comes on and I fill up my average MPG on the screen is 16-17, with my calculated about 1mpg less then that.
All highway (64-75mph) the computer says around 17.
I found out this weekend that my truck LOVES 45-50 mph long back roads with few stops. I had the computer up to 21 driving to Maine and back this weekend via 202. Once I got to the highway portion of the trip it dribbled back down again to around 17 (65-70mph)
Again, calculated is generally about 1mpg less then the onboard computer shows.

bro, all cars are good at this speed. in fact, there's some study out there showing if we reduced our freeway speed limit to 45mph, we'd have gazillion gallons of gas available over what we have now.
but this isnt happening anytime soon.
my mpg is 13-14 real life. lifted with 32s.
No one is getting close to 20 unless its 95% freeway driving. I'm averaging around 15 on my daily drives.

Exactly. I live rurally, with enough rural 2 lane highway, that my week to week per tank average is right around 16 if I'm careful with the skinny pedal.
When I refill, my range is often 325-350. It's nothing to get 350-360 miles out of a tank for me. The computer routinely reports 20.6mpg (non-towing)and my driving is mainly a hybrid of lots of 2 lane country roads, some in-town driving, and very little highway (interstate) miles.
I don't think the mileage is really bad considering mine (V8 4WD) is really an AWD, how heavy these things are, and how small and relatively weak our 4.7L engines are compared to the popular GM and Ford "truck" V8s (5.3-6.2L gasoline engines). The only thing I wish Toyota would've gotten on board with was DoD (displacement on demand - GM calls theirs "Active Fuel Technology"). My wife's '07 M/C SS had it (5.3L V8) and her current '09 Pontiac G8 GT (6.0L V8) has it, and it yeilds great results. She averaged nearly 22mpg in the Monte Carlo and still gets over 21 in her G8 GT. When you're cruising on the road, and the computer kicks those engines down to 4 cylinders, you can't tell it. The instant you "step on it", it's all 8 cylinders again...they're all drive-by-wire now so it's back up on all 8 cylinders before you could notice any lag. I love it. It'd add several MPGs to our V8 Runners had Toyota developed their own version of it. With Chrysler and GM putting lots of models out with it for the past 3+ years, they can't say it isn't viable.

Not true. I get over 20 with mine, even when I use a calculator at fillup. Once I got her broken in, my 4Runner started giving me between 20-21mpg with every tank, both on the truck's computer and the calculator, and my 2008's 23k miles may include 100-150 freeway miles, total.
This morning, I filled up at 352 miles on the trip meter. It took 17.2 gallons. Call me crazy, but that works out to about 20.47mpg. The computer reported 20.6mpg for that tank...and there were 0 freeway miles on that tank (and truthfully, no towing miles on it either). I hardly use the interstates around here (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill NC). If I wanted to park, I'd go straight to a parking lot.

Yes, towing MPG is a totally different situation.
I have been on some towing trips that make the 13-14 mpg some are getting here look FANTASTIC in comparison.
Hey, for me that is the price I am willing to pay in lower MPG and more in fuel costs.
Maybe I should start a thread about MPG when towing then we will see some single digit MPG numbers.

That's pretty amazing, I don't think I've seen any other V8 owners post those kind of numbers.
Factor that in with the speedo being off by ~3-5%. On stock tires, I noticed about 3-5% difference between the speedo and gps. So even the hand calculations can be optimistic.

I believe it. I can do 450 miles on 22 gallons on the highway. Seriously. Those are readings from the odometer, not the computer.
Stock tires, 4x4.

Also, I think this is important with regards to obtaining good mpg:
-for best engine break-in if the truck is new, use regular 5W-30 oil the first 30K miles.
-then switch to synthetic oil thereafter (still 5W-30).
I don't put synthetic oil too early.
