Question about duplicate keys

But do they need the the key as well to make this copy or just the number off that plate?
The reason I ask is because of security! Any smoow who works for toyota can look me up or anyone ells and find this number to make Duplicates? Not sure how this works that why I ask! I hope this isn't the case because that would be FU..

I know when I got a full duplicate (not the valet) they wanted BOTH the number plate (that was attached to the valet key) and one of my 'pod' keys. They also wanted to see my license to match it to the 'owner' of the vehicle.
I locked my key in my 4 runner a few months ago while out of town. I went to a local dealer and they (after much confirmation as to my identity) were able to cut a key that would unlock my door and start my truck for about 15.00. All they had was the vin number of my rig.

Well I guess that confirms it then! Thanks traskell! And now for a thief or someone with a grudge against you that works at a toyota dealership can really Fk your world up! Sweet!
I think if you check around, you will find that ANY dealer of any Make can do the same thing. It is not just Toyota. And they have been able to do this for many years now. I know you are concerned about security, but I assure you, if they (whoever they are) want your car, they will take it. Not much you can do the stop them unless you are there with a loaded weapon and you are willing to use it.
Ace Hardware and Chipped Keys
I was told that Ace Hardware could copy and program chipped keys, but when I tried to duplicate my 2011 4Runner's valet key about a month ago, the machine at two different Ace Hardware stores could not program the duplicate.
Has anybody else encountered this?
Will I have to go to the dealer to make a duplicate valet key?

off the top of my head. its been a while.
the number plate allows them to cut you key using that number and no other key needed
dealership can still get you a key with no keys or number plate
in order to get any key cut, you will need to prove ownership
most dealerships if not all wont do salvaged title
usually you have 2 master keys (black) and 1 valet key (gray)
1)lose all keys but have one programed master key = cheaper to get new ones programed
in order to program a new master key you need to have alteast one programed master key.
the valet key wont allow the tech to program a new master key
the valet key has a different program
wanna say only 5 master keys can be programed at once
2) lose all keys = cost more to program new keys because they have to "reseed" the ecu to blank keys. takes a little longer.
wipes out all previously programed key

the problem might be because the valet keys have a different program to them and will only accept a valet program. so if your trying to use a master key at ACE to make a valet key it wont work. now if your trying to use a valet key to make a valet key. the keys ACE has maybe only master keys and will only accept master key programs
why do you want another valet key anyways?
Yep, tried making a duplicate valet key from an original valet key. Was going to give the duplicate valet key to the parents.
Hmm... According to this post, the chip in the valet key is designed to not to copy.

its better to give them a master key. if you lose all your keys. it will be cheaper for you to have them make you new master keys with a spare master. a valet key cant be used to make another master key or valet key. so the dealer has to reseed (wipe out ecu) to program all new codes for new keys
