Question about shift points....

Happy New Year !

This may be a dumb question

If I put my 4r in shift4 are the shift points the same in gears 1 thru 4 as they are in Drive 1 thru 5? I use Shift mode quite a bit and it seems to have different (better) shift points. Similar to my 03 Taco when I pushed the ECT button.

You mean you push the shift lever to the left and into the manual/sequential shift position?

If so, the "shift points" you are referring to are when the the ECU determines you are forgetting to shift and thus shifts gears in order to keep the truck from revving the engine to high.

I'm pretty sure Toyota did not intent that feature to be used as a daily driving mode (i.e. running the engine to the top of the safe rpm limit).

The manual mode does work nicely to for instance keep it in 4th gear in the mountains so it doesn't shift up/down 20 times while ascending.

If you are looking for slightly better performance, you may also want to turn off the ECO mode.

Okki

Thanks for the response. I don't manually shift from 1 through 4.....I wasn't clear on that. But, I do slap it to the left and that puts it in 4th gear. To me it feels like it has different shift points than drive mode does 1 thru 4.

I'm actually happy with the performace and have noticed an improvment since i purchased it. I have 7500 miles and it seems to have a little more pep.

ECO mode is automatically turned off in S, isn't it? What exactly is ECO mode? As far as I can tell, its just a fancy light the lights up to tell you that you're driving well. Does it actually do something?

I drive in S nearly all the time. Yes, the 'shift points' where the car automatically upshifts for you are at the extreme end of the spectrum, much farther apart than in D. But I am glad they are there, just in case I forget to upshift now and then.
