Quiet the Engine Bay, to be able to make exhaust more noticialbe

I've been wondering forever on how to make my '98 not sound like a giant pissed off fan. I like the exhaust, sounds pretty good IMO. But that fan sound - it's killing off the exhaust. Any way to fix? Sound deadener?

Limited V6 4x4.

If the fan is making a lot of noise all the time, regardless of when and where you are driving, then your fan clutch might be locked-up.

In which case it would be time to rebuild or replace it.

It's not really that, it's typically what I believe to be in first gear but when it switches to second its not as loud, but it sure does make the people in the chickfila drive thru hate me. It does slow down when I'm parked, but not fast enough to make me worry about a rebuild being necessary.

or, your exhaust isn't loud enough... j/k I would check the fan clutch just in case like 02SE said.

I usually can't hear mine because I'm yelling....

There could be something wrong, but honestly, they're just loud on these things. Personally, I love the sound. It sounds like there's a hell of a lot more going on under there than there really is haha

If you wanna make it louder, throw a glasspack in there :lol: My roommates can always tell when I'm pulling up haha

Anything but a V8 that's loud just sounds like an annoying wannabe IMO.

Yeah buddy, just rice that thing out! A while ago I found a hello kitty exhaust tip, you could get that too.

I have gone through the drivethrough a million times in my 4runner, and the fan noise isn't anything particularly noticeable, certainly not enough for a drive through worker to hate you over, I mean they get all the hoons and morons with pea-shooter exhausts coming through for them to hate, I doubt you even register on their radar...

If it is so loud that they complain, then I agree that you might have some other problem. I mean mine sounds a bit like a jet engine when it first starts up, that just means she's keeping cool by moving alot of air. Pretty normal.

A V6 can sound good. The application is what matters. Loud in general on the street is just obnoxious IMO, especially if it yields no real power increase. Nobody really wants to hear your car. What I find utterly stupid are the people who install loud mufflers on their V6 and have the audacity to say it sounds like a V8.

I would agree with this. It should only be spinning when you first start it for a few seconds, and when it gets hot.

sound like its locked up.


op, check the fan when the engine is off. spin it by hand.
