Rack & Pinion

I have a 2007 Sr5 Spt V6 4runner. I just passed my 60k marker and of course the dealer tells me I should have that done at the last service. But while I am there they also tell me the Rack & Pinion is seaping. In order to fix this they have to replcae the entire Rack & Pinion and then flush the steering. All at a nice cost of around $1500. Is it common for the rack & pinion to go out after 60k? This truck has never seen a trail and has seen nothing but paved roads. Do you really need to replace the entire unit or is there one component that you can replace for this. As I told the dealer when they said it is not covered in warranty I am really going to have to reconsider buying Toyota in the future if after 60k miles I am going to have to replace major components.

Yes that is going to be what I will be doing this weekend hopefully. Sad thing is that if it is seaping as they would say I would expect to feel a little play steering. I do not feel any more than what you would expect in a 4 y/o truck

You won't feel play in the steering, that would be from tie rod ends going bad. You'll eventually hear some graoning when you turn. WHen you hear that the fluid is low and needs refilled. I've driven on a bad rack on another car for years, just kept refilling it. I don't see how it'd seap and you not have low fluid though.
