Radio Stopped working.

I have an 03' 4Runner. While driving to work today, my radio just stopped working. I didn't touch it or anything. It just suddently stopped working. There's power and I can change stations, but there's no sound coming out. I put in a CD and I can see the tracks playing, but there's not sound. When I move the volume control, I don't see the volume settings changing at all. Anyone know what the problem can be?

Run The Diagnostics

Diagnostic Mode is:

1) Turn Ignition to ACC
2) Press Preset 1 and 6 while hitting DISC 3 Times
3) Use the SEEK TRACK Buttons to step through
4) When done hit DISC 2 Times and trun off ignition

See what it tells you. If you do not get "numbers" and the word "good" on the diagnostics it maybe the head unit.

OK, gotta ask -- how on earth did you know this???

My radio/CD stopped working too this morning. It was playing normally, then nothing. I have a 04 LTD w/ Nav. I'm not sure if I can do the diagnostic procedures. Prob going to take it in to dealership.

T4RLTD03, did you find the cause of your radio failure?

Thanks!

Update: Radio suddenly started working again later in the day while on the way to the dealership. Dealership couldn't find anything wrong with radio....

Of course -- these things are programmed to make you look foolish to the dealer!! ;):

I have a 2003 Sport w/JBL 10 speakers and 2 weeks ago my sysem dd the same thing! I turned ignition off/on and it has been fine since.

Yesterday, while approaching a major bridge (lots of traffic) I geared down to 3rd -- every day i do this -- yesterday, once on the bridge and accellerating, it would not go into 4th or 5th even though the box was in 'D'. I stopped, turned off ignition and restarted and it's been fine since.

I think there is a serious bug in this computer! Dealer hasn't heard of either incident in the past. A needle in the hay stack.

Yesterday I found that I was unable to adjust the volume level from either the radio controls or the steering wheel buttons. Once I got to my destination I turned the ignition off and back on.. Works fine now...

So far, this has occured 3 times. End of Nov/03, Dec 31/03, Jan 5/04.

It seems related to trying to reset the way the doors automatically lock when the gear is changed. By default, when I take it out of Park (P), the doors lock. The manual says to press the power lock for 5 seconds to change to having the doors unlock when putting into Park. It seems that the radio freezing occurs when I try and change the way the doors lock.

Can anyone who had this radio freezing problem advise if they tried messed with the door locks?

This afternoon, I tried out my theory about holding down the power lock button for 5 seconds (press on driver lock button, pressing towards rear of vehicle) and the radio did lock up again! I was in a bit of a hurry, but I don't think I had the ignition turned to ACC.

I've written to my dealer to see what they can do about this.

It will be interesting if others, who also had locked radio controls, would try this theory and report back.

This happened to the radio in my 03 as well. No sound in tape, cd, or radio mode...but the dials worked. It hasn't happened since.

Anyone else notice backgound noise (similiar to the break up noise produced when a radio channel signal is to weak and the radio receiver isn't "locking" or tuning in) in their AM/FM radio?

I have the JBL single CD...I believe there is a TSB on radio noise...just want to check if anyone else has noticed this.

me2

i had the same problem...i just turned the ignition on and off and it was fine....mine stayed stuck on volume #22, and wouldnt go any higher but i stil couldnt hear anything....this has happened to me twice now, but i didnt think it was worthy to post...i see now it is a common problem!

My dealer figures the radio needs replacement and has ordered a new one. I explained that, in my opinion, this was not going to help as there shouldn't be any link between the power locks and the radio. Yet when trying to reconfigure the power locks (PER THE OWNERS MANUAL), the radio acts up.

I'll post back when I know more... today the moon roof started acting up. It now longer allows a one-touch press of the button to open/close it.

This is beginning to sound like either a major f'd up computer system OR one heck of a lemon!

I had the IDENTICAL problem with my JBL 10 speaker system, all stock. It happened last November 2003. I made an appt to be at the dealership at 1pm, left work early and it was FINE!!! Grrr... They would not speculate on the problem because they couldn't reproduce it. It hasn't happened since. Very ODD!!

I have noticed a few quirks with this vehicle's electronics.

When I went to take delivery, when the salesperson went to show me the key remote back window button, the truck would beep, but the window wouldn't open! Kind of an embarassing moment.

Anyway, what fixed it was turning on the ignition, then using the dash mounted back window buttons. After that, it works fine.

The manual states that if the battery is disconnected, one needs to "normalize" the back window using the dash buttons. Probably has to do with the computer knowing where the window currently is.

I have a brother in law that is a Toyota factory mechanic. I'll have to bug him and see if they have heard of these things.

Hi,

I had the same problem with no sound from my JBL stero on cold mornings, but then a few minutes later it would come on.

Toyota resolved this issue by replacing JBL amplifier. The TSB is AU003-03. The condition as stated on this TSB says that some customers may experience a condition where there is static noise from all channels of the audio system or no sound from the audio system. This condition usually occurs on cold mornings. Once the amplifier warms up, normal operation is restored. An improved JBL amplifier is available to address this condition.

I got mine replace last Sept. 2003 and haven't had any problems since. TSB AU003-03 has been available since June 16, 2003. I didn't even have to bring my vehicle in to reproduce the problem. I just explained the problem on the phone to my service advisor and gave him the TSB #. He ordered the part and a few days later he called me in to replace it.

yabedude, the only time I noticed no audio sound was first thing in the morning and I was not preforming any door lock procedure. I have my door locks automatically after 5 to 10 mph.

Hope this helps.

Gene - how did you change the doors locks?

Hi Gene,

How did you manager to get the door locks to change from the default of locking when put into Park? I've been trying to follow the owners manual every now and then, and I have had no success.

Chris

PS: Appt with dealer this Friday to install the new JBL amp per a TSB. Also more parts being sqapped in regards to another TSB to fix the squeeks I've been hearing from the front shocks (or in that area) when just going over speed bumps around my townhouse complex. Sorry, but I forgot what the parts were but will post back next week when I know more.

Followup

I've been posting about problems with the radio controls freezing and one instance of when the tranny (or computer) remained in 3rd gear and only reset when the ignition was restarted.

Yesterday am, the dealer changed out the amplifier that shipped with it (a TSC). They said that it may not fix my problems, but because of the TSC and the documented noise that the original amp could cause, it was worth a shot. If the radio controls freeze again, they will replace the radio too.

They also probed the system to see if any trace of the high RPM's were evident. Nothing was found. If it happens again, and it hasn't after the first time well over a month ago, I'm to bring it back immediately.

One other thing they changed were 'cushions' to do with the front suspension (another TSC). I had earlier reported squeaking when driving over rather large speed bumps around my residence.

I'm not happy that I've been having some issues with a new vehicle, but I haven't any reason to complain about the dealer I've chosen.

I'm not sure what happened to the moonroof (that the one-touch buttons failed), but I figured out that pressing the button for 10 seconds resets that functionality. It's been fince since.

I'll post if these computer related issues continue.
