Radio Stopped working.

It's back!

2003 V8 radio has been freezing since I bought the truck in Nov/03. Jan 30/04, the dealer changed the amp per the TSC. Today, 5 minutes after leaving my residence, the radio (sound) stopped! Restarting ignition reset it once again. Just called dealer and told them that the amplifier is not the problem.

In my opinion, it's either a flaky JBL HU or the main computer needs new firmware (software).

As usual, I'll keep you posted.

Radio Stops Working...Again!!

I had the same problem last November, but it was working when I took it to the dealer. They required that the problem be seen by a service tech in otrder to fix it under warranty, so it didn't get fixed then.

Today when driving home from work, "boop", radio stops all volume function. Everything works except NO SOUND. And when thring to change the sound ither with the steering wheel controls or the HU knob, the radio does not respond.

SO I drove straight to the dealership and left the engine running, I didn't want to risk having it go away like last time. I had to wait 25 minutes for a tech to come out to the truck, just to look at it and say "oh yeah, something's wrong with the radio".. It's written up and I go in Friday for a new Head Unit. And the 7500 mile service.

Besides the sulfer smell which is not a warrantable problem, this is the only problem I have had with the truck, and I blame JBL for the issue, not Toyota. Much better than my last vehicle, though. Problems with steering spline, anti-lock system, brake wear, and trim pieces falling off.( Oldsmobile Intrigue 1998 )
 
It happened to me too!

I've got the JBL 10 speaker system and I've had it lock up last August and a couple times since. It's odd that you can change CDs and modes but cannot change the volume. Turning the ignition off and then on again seems to fix the issue.

I would think that it's a software issue in the radio's controls. Sometimes you will get no sound and, at others, it will stay stuck at 1 volume level and you cannot change it.

I am dropping my 4Runner off @ the dealer tomorrow to have the driver's seat squeaking fixed. I will make sure to ask if they see this in other models as well.
 
i have an '03 with the stock head unit, not the jbl 10 spkr. my radio has been working fine since i bought it last x-mas. i had no problem programming the door locks either. i just followed the manual verbatim. maybe it's the jbl systems that are acting up?
 
6 speaker system here. No problems noticed either.

Programming the door locks took me a few times. When they say hold a button for X seconds, that means hold it AT LEAST X seconds and NO MORE THAN X+1 seconds.

I think there is a serious bug in this computer! Dealer hasn't heard of either incident in the past. A needle in the hay stack.

This is obviously a wide spread issue... I also had this problem with my 03'sport JBL. Everything worked.. i just couldn't change the volume. Turned the Runner off, then back on, and everything worked. I fixed the issue by replacing the headunit with a 'yota NAV:D
 
Same issue with ours (early model with build date of 09/02) with a "Disc Error" on the multi-disc system. Turn it off and back on it would work for a bit, then right back. I took it in and the dealer replace the head unit. No problem since.
 
The first fix my dealer did was to change the amp. Then the problem occurred again 2 days later. The dealer has changed the amp again, however this amp is 'an upgrade'.

They explained how the original amp had the sub-woofer directly connected (the speaker and amp are physically connected) and the first change was to simply replace that original part.

Last week they changed the amp and installed a different amp -- different part number. This amp is not "physically connected" to the sub-woofer.

This far, the radio has not acted up. I will soon tear the panels off to see what they're talking about as I've not heard of an amp and speaker being attached unless by pair of speaker wires.

I also would have expected them to change the HU like some of you other guys have had done.

As long as it works, I don't really care.

Last week the dealer replaced the amp (TSB AU003-03). However, this was due to noise from the JBL system. I'm not sure if this will fix the phantom volume issue...doesn't seem to be related to the amp, but the head unit or some software issue. This has happened three times, I don't see it as a big issue.
 
I have a brand new 2004 limited , Just the other day got in the truck after it had sat for awhile ..and when i started the truck i remember somthing being funny with the door locks..then 2 minutes down the road the radio quite..pulled over turned off the ignition started it again and eveything has been fine since..It has had me curious as to why that happened so i started doing research and came across this forum..good to know its not just me (i guess) anyway i think it obviousley had somthing to do with the computer and it needing to be restet.But i do distinctley remember fooling aroung with the door locks when i started it that day.they didnt lock or somthing properly? dunno.. It has not happened again tho so i have not brought it back to the dealer.
 
Repaired...Hopefully

Service took almost 2 hours , including an oil change. Radio looks the same except for the orange backlight, which in fact matchs the computer consolde readout now. ( It was always slightly darker than the console before, regardless of how it was dimmed.)
Of course if it ever happens again during warranty I will mention it.

I know this is very old thread - BUT my '03 SE w/singled CD JBL Synth 10 speaker system is doing same thing (no sound til you turn off and back on ignition). It did this only once when under warranty but never again until really cold weather set in week ago - its done it 5 times now in last week or so! I do hear a click from back right corner when it occurs. Might also be related - the rear sound system no longer functions either including when I do have sound in front system (tried new battery in remote -to no avail). Is rear sound. Does anyone have the part number for the new revised amp? I'm 6 months out of warranty although only 20k miles - so assume cost is "on me" despite wide spread problems with original amp and TSP --- or is Toyota possibly doing a courtesy replacement? Any others successful it getting it replaced out of warranty periord? If not what is cost of the new amp?

I believe this affects several of the Toyota corporation radios across models lines when the temperature is cold outside. I have the Scion 1804 model radio and it acted the same way when the temp got down to 28 degrees once. After driving around for awhile and warming up the inside of the truck; the darn thing started to act correctly. Good luck at getting Toyota to replace it outside of your normal warranty period.

See what it tells you. If you do not get "numbers" and the word "good" on the diagnostics it maybe the head unit.

Even though my radio is working fine I decided to do this procedure and run the diognostics. Well I came back with three codes; two said to "chec" and the other said "good"

My question is does anyone know where to find out what these codes mean and what to do about the "chec" ones?

P190 - check
P440 - check
P1F4 - good

My '03 v6 Ltd. w/JBL & multi-CD changer had been experiencing the same problems: early in the drive NO SOUND from radio or CD player. Radio stays powered & all controls work just NO SOUND. Shutting the radio on then off (while driving) did not help. Radio was replaced with a JVC (HD) radio but the problem persists & seems to be worsening. Drove the garage-kept car today on a warm day (77F) and within 2 miles of home, the new radio shut off again. This is happening almost daily. The only solution is restarting the car then the problem goes away for the current day.

Question: Has there been a definitive solution outlined on this or any other forum? Is it the factory amplifier? :confused: I would go to Best Buy & replace the amp & possibly upgrade the speakers if I knew it would work. I plan to keep this car unless and until Toyota sells the new 4Runner in gold or the new sandy beach metallic color. Thanks for your replies. Ron
 
Most definately its the OEM Amplifier --- there was actually a different replacement unit available when it was still under warranty. I think the wiring is proprietary to that JBL Amplified so not sure a different amp would be plug and play. Mine only does it when its cold out.
 
Wolfgang, thanks for the reply. I bought the car used in 2004 yet the radio only started misbehaving recently. This past week it stopped about 4 times and the weather has been quite warm. Guess I will start to make note of the temperature when it pukes. I can check with Best Buy to see what a new amp + wire harness would cost. Very strange that I had no problems for 6 years but now I am having a bunch of episodes. :wtf:
 
Hello. I just purchased a 1997 Toyota 4 runner and I am having this problem from an earlier post: (Reply to WFMtoyota's Post: I will get those checked this weekend. I do have one question though, ALL of my other accessories and items are working....wouldn't that mean that the fuse block is receiving current? The dome light, instument panel, turn signals, wipers, air bags, all other items are working. The only thing not working is: Radio/CD player Clock Dome light Everytime I try to put a 10 amp dome light fuse in, it blows the fuse. Any thoughts? Thank you!
