Radio Upgrades... Let see them.

Alpine 9” Halo ILX F309. People have mixed feelings on this floating design. I think it modernized the interior.

This looks pretty good, better than i expected. Any more details on what exactly is needed to get it all to work. Do all the steering wheel controls, bluetooth mic, factory amps, etc. all work and if so what part numbers are needed? Can the screen be mounted lower to look more like it is on the dash and not protruding above...covering the empty din slot? Side view pic?

Car toys had a deal $850 installed. But for that price you would lose all OEM controls, rear camera, etc.

I asked those guys to make sure this headunit works with OEM rear camera, OEM steering controls, OEM JBL synthesis sound system including amps, but there was some computer module that needed to be purchased for an additional $150 to retain everything.

Yes, you can adjust the height to whatever you want. I prefer to have access to the single din below but I get what you’re saying. Will post a profile pic later.

Aux input is in center console

Is there a way to add newer Gen 4 radio in an 03? Mine doesn't have an auxiliary input but I know the newer ones did. Its hard for to go completely after market as most of them don't match. If I did go aftermarket I would want it to look fairly stock.

My 06 SR5 has the basic CD radio. No tape deck, no JBL, no steering wheel controls.

The aux input / headphone jack is in the center console. Lift up the armrest, and the jack is on the interior front side of the console, below the coin holder. You need to flip open a little plastic cover to expose the jack.

Does that “tablet” style screen somehow retract into the head unit? In the pic it appears to be larger than what would fit in the DD opening. Do you have a pic of it without the screen deployed (if it does retract)?

Hmm... so I guess it’s sort of like an add on tablet then? Never saw that before, only the ones with motorized screens. What you said makes sense though, because that screen appears way bigger than the opening.

Nothing much to see with mine. OEM CD player radio on my 2004 but I added a USA Spec Bluetooth adaptor and Kenwood under seat subwoofer. I’ve had the USA Spec for about 5 years and it works flawlessly for cord free music streaming from iPhone and phone calls. The Kenwood subwoofer under the passenger seat adds noticeable and much needed low end to music. Highly recommend both.

The screen does not retract. I plan on doing a write up on the entire thing once I sort out some wiring issues. I am trying to tether my phone data to the radio without using hotspot or buying a 3g/4g dongle. Hopefully put together a concise overview with pictures showing what others only discuss on other threads.

Kenwood DDX6705S

Installed Kenwood DDX6705S with Metra 95-8202 dash kit, and Metra 70-1761 wiring harness. Amazing fit, looks nearly stock. Most people put the MIC on top of the driver side A-pillar, but I decided to put it by the HU where it will get better reception from all passengers.

Also added a dual-USB outlet in one of the blanks near the gear selector. Audio outlet connects to back of HU via USB extension cable for Android Auto / Apple Carplay. Charge outlet is tapped into nearby cigarette lighter.

For Android Auto / Apple Carplay, use good quality USB cables rated for USB 2.0 or 3.0. Initially I used a cheap Dollar store cable and HU would not recognize the phone. Would say invalid device or no device connected. Problem solved once I got a good USB cable.

Purchased a back up camera as well, but haven't installed yet.

One of the bulbs on the HVAC display died during the install. Must have broken when popping the display in / out to access HU. Easy fix, took 5 minutes to swap the bulb.

Corolla Head Unit

I went with a Corolla head unit because I thought it looked "modern enough" without being overbearing. Seemed to fit better with the period of the car but added things like HD radio, XM, Navigation, BT etc.

It does not have maintenance reminders, but it DOES have navigation, USB, XM, Bluetooth calling / streaming, and AUX inputs. It has the ENTUNE system so you can access things like traffic, weather, etc but ENTUNE isn't that great (but its part of the nav box so you get it regardless if you use it).

When changing a brake light bulb I noticed that the Best Buy installer appears to have tapped into the reverse wire in the light connector rather than run the cable to the unit. Is it possible this is interfering with the settings?

Not happy with this unit and camera at all.

Not happy with this unit and camera at all.

might want to have the camera turn on wire with acc
leave the reverse trigger hook up to reverse wire.
make sure the back up camera is turned on in the settings.
its in system settings.


just make sure they are using the back up camera video input in the back of unit instead of the the aux.

should be able to see the line during reverse trigger.
when using as stand alone rear view, should be no lines.

I will compile a build list if needed. Love the radio but cannot get videos to play. Microphone is in the roof and is a corvette microphone cover. Rear back cam is next to license plate light and has been great too. Easy to back to a trailer now

What kind of video formats are you trying? I know that with my Pioneers, they've had to be very specific and not overly large file sizes.
