Range Display.

For those about to flame, I did the Search.

The Situation:
When fuel tank gets low I get amber light on display that says it's low.
Then shortly my range display reads "0".
When I get fuel I notice I've near 5 gallons of gas left in tank.

The Question:
Is it normal for Range Display to be so paranoid?
Can it be reset to read "0" when it is lil closer to it, say 2 gallons?
If so how?

Bonus (for me) Question:
My map app on Entune is realy out of date; are there any updates directly to map or is it part of total Entune update from I-tunes? Is there a better way?

I think your reading is a bit off. :violin:
I tested mine by accident one time driving in west Tejas at night where there was a stretch of almost 200 miles w/o an open station. When I was about a mile from the first open station the gauge went to "0". I put 22.5 gallons in...whew! Some argument whether it's a 23g or 24g, but I thought the gauge was pretty darn accurate.
 
My low fuel light on the gas gauge comes on when I have 3 gallons left. Did this on my Tacoma also. My range goes to zero right before this happens. Which puts the range left as being off by 3 gallons which equals around 50 to 60 miles of highway driving. I would go by the low warning light rather than the range indicator. I feel this is much more accurate. The range distance left ballparks it for me tho. It consistently works that way for me. Range hits zero, gas gauge warning light comes on. I find a gas station with in the next 40 to 50 miles I'm good. This being said I never let it get below 1/4 tank as a general rule. I found out the above info due to testing the system on purpose for future reference. Might come in handy some day. Did with my Tacoma;)
 
Hm. Mine, a '14, goes from 15 miles to 1. Scared the heck out of me the first time.

I just tend to get annoyed by all the meters and instruments showing fuel, "eco-driving" and range info when I obviously didn't buy the car for its stellar fuel consumption. To me it feels like Toyota is trying to tell me I should've bought a Prius.

you know you can turn the eco light off, right?
 
You guys shouldn't be too reliant on the "range to empty" meter, it all really depends on how closely you're currently driving to what it's guessing the remaining range left is.

For example, if it's guessing you're averaging 20 MPG, and you've been flooring it for the past 1-2 hours, you will likely run out of gas before you actually achieve that range. On the other hand, if the computer is used to heavy stop and go driving and guessing 10 MPG, and you're on a road trip doing a constant 50 MPH on flat terrain, you'll hit "0 miles left" long before you run out of gas. These examples are of course exaggerated, but you get the point :)

The more accurate thing is to go by the low gas indicator light...this seems to come on right around the 2-3 gallons left mark. Of course the smarter thing to do is to not run down your tank so far if you can avoid it.

Also, one thing I noticed, the low gas indicator seems to overrule the range to empty meter, in that if you happen to trip your low gas indicator, the range just jumps straight to 0 miles left. I figured this out parking on a steep driveway with a low tank of gas. So I think practically speaking, the chances of running out of gas following the range to empty meter is slim :noidea:
