Rattles and creaks.... How much patience do you have?

My 2014 Limited now has a horrible, loud creak when traveling over any uneven road surface, so almost all the time.

It's been hard to locate, but I think it's in or above the passenger side B-Pillar, and it's driving me NUTS. It's pretty loud, have to have the radio up a good bit otherwise I'm constantly annoyed. Seem to be able to duplicate it pushing on the headliner near the pillar but not 100% sure.

I'm not one to tear apart my vehicle, but this seems to be somewhere behind the headliner, which I don't have any experience messing with, nor do I particularly want to rip it out on that side.

I can take it to the dealer, but I just feel like that will be a waste of time, but I don't have any other options. Anyone have this and attempt to mitigate yourself?

I wanted to give an update to my interior creak, I can't be the only 5th 4Runner to ever have this sound (although it was a first for my dealer).

The interior creak, which I traced to the passenger side B-pillar sounded like metal on metal and would tick over every bump, and creak badly when the body flexed on a turn or dip. It was quite loud an annoying and thank god I was still under warranty, two full days at the dealer and it's fixed!

Turns out it was a metal bracket that the B-pillar airbag is attached to the body with, above the seat belt. So nice having my quiet 4Runner back!

Do people honestly expect everything to be rattle free when they're driving over rutted out roads and rough terrain?

I have had a couple rattles and creaks that have become progressively worse over the last few thousand miles. One rattle comming from under the passenger side dash (located it), one rattle coming from under the driver's side dash (not located) and a really nasty constant creak coming from above the B-pillar. My questions are, anyone else out there have these noises?

Hi SOcal,

As far as the rattle above the "B-Pillar", open the sunroof and examine the carriage (glass assembly) and tracks for loose or foreign objects up there... pretty sure you'll find a problem. Under the dash could be anything, can't begin to guess!

Do people honestly blow off loud metal creaks that passengers inquire about when riding in their car?

How dare I expect my less than two year old $45,000 vehicle not to sound like a 78' Buick.

If something clearly isn't right, and it's under warranty, I can't imagine why a dummy like me would want it fixed, DUH

Trust me, I know what a brand new car feels and drives like. But if you use your 4runner to travel the roads and terrain that it was engineered for, you're going to get creaks and rattles at some point.

If you want to keep it a garage queen, then you might fare differently. But driving over rutted, undulating roads and terrain, loading up the suspension and having wheels coming off the ground will take its toll on any vehicle, even a Toyota.

The 4Runner my daily driver and our main family car, we put a lot of miles on it. I have a Polaris RZR 4-seater for trails so we don't offroad the limited much, but I am not afraid to. I trailer the RZR with the 4Runner and it does fine.

That said, I didn't buy the Limited as a trail beater, rather an alternative to a mini-van like uni-body people mover. It's my third 4Runner and serves our family well. This creak was truly bad, and not acceptable for any vehicle of it's age, supposed build quality, etc, as it sounded like the body was coming apart.

The hissing squishing obnoxiously noisy brake pedal is worse than any creaks on my truck.

Our 2010 Trail has 37000 miles on it and is still rattle/squeak free .
On the other hand our Xrerra is a rattle/squeak haven .

I remember first hearing that brake pedal sound, I'm used to it now but I don't know of another newer vehicle that does that. Not to mention the strange pedal feel but goodness, in 2016 you would think Toyota could do better.

And if I recall they made the brake lines steel with the 14' update to better "pedal feel", as hard to believe as that is.

I know this is somewhat old, but hoping someone can answer.

Is the B-pillar airbag bolt behind the plastic B-pillar covers, or do you have to remove the headliner to get to it? I am certain I have the exact same noise as you. I haven't fully taken off the B-pillar trim yet. I could only partially remove the top trip to look at the seat belt adjuster but I couldn't see anything that looked like an airbag bracket. Or is the airbag in the lower cover?

Killed the creak

Had the terrible metal noise, turns out it was the plastic black piece on the bottom of the windshield on the outside,right in the bottom corner, made the creek when I touched it with my finger, (inside the vehicle, creek sounded like it was the headliner, a pillar) noise travels.hope this helps
