I just got back from a 6,000 mile cross country and back road trip and averaged right at 22 mpg. Not too bad for a 4wd rig.

After just over a month of ownership on my new-to-me 2011 Limited, and two fill-ups, I'm very pleased to report hand calculated mileages of 19 mpg and 21 mpg for mainly in-city driving.
My 2003 Limited V8 would struggle to get 16-17 mpg in town.
I also enjoy playing the "ECO" game (keeping the green ECO light activated on my dash for fuel-efficient driving) that the Toyota engineers came up with.

Sorry to hijack this thread. I'm not allow to start a new thread yet.
But I bought my TEP w/KDSS 3 days ago. Only has now 70 miles. Bought it when it had 11 miles.
The MPG gauge on the dashboard keeps hovering around 11-13. It was doing this the day after. I've resetted it and after driving it it goes back to the same number. I have done no modification, tires are stock and the miles that have been drivin has all been between 60-70 mph. If someone here can explain what happening. I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance

I get about 15mpg in town. Got about 18mpg going to Lake Tahoe from the bay area. 2016 TRD Pro.

Check mpg the old fashioned way and see if it jives with the computer.

1) Give it more distance. As with anything, the more data points, the more accurate a representation of what you can actually expect, given your driving style.
2) Change your driving style if you want better or worse fuel economy.
For reference, with near as makes no difference 650 lbs weight added to my 4Runner, 33" 285 Duratracs, and the wind resistance generated from my Gobi rack, I sit around 13 mixed (90% city) / 18 highway.

Well, I guess this is what I get for giving someone else a hard time about complaining about poor mileage.
I hadn't thought to check what my gas mileage estimate was through the onboard computer until yesterday - and I was disappointed.
I know, I know, I'm driving a truck.
And I really don't intend for this to be a complaining thread as I'm more than willing to accept things as they are. And believe me, I totally understand that when you start changing things that directly affect the basic physics of a mechanical machine moving across the earth, there will be other things impacted.
I really have no issue with low mileage, it is what it is, I guess I was just hopeful mileage wouldn't dip as much as it did.
So, I pose a question, just out of curiosity, and also (yes, I shamelessly admit) to try and feel better about myself (haha):
What average mile per gallon are you seeing and what is your current modification configuration that you think might be affecting this.
I'll start by sharing mine:
I noticed yesterday as I was driving on the highway I was averaging 13.8 mpg. I'm not willing to disclose my exact speed unfortunately, but when I came down to 73, I was able to get that average up to 16 mpg.
The 13.8 did include some city driving.
Since then I've seen the average hover around 15 (combined city/highway).
I have 285/70/17 KO2's and the 2.2 meter Eezi Awn rack.
The rack is at the highest height it can be (likely affecting mileage somehow, not sure how much).
I suspect the tires are the largest contributor to the mileage reduction. I have not verified tire pressure.
Before rack and tires I was seeing an average of around 17.5 city/highway.
I'm curious what others are seeing.

With all due respect, we don't need another "What's your mpg" thread. I will give you a bit of info and then I will merge this into one of the other mpg threads.
This info is based on reading probably thousands of mpg posts right here in the 5th gen forum so it is based on owner input. It also takes into account that at least half of these guys don't know how to accurately present their overall mpg.
If you are using the readout in the vehicle - you will not be accurate.
If you are doing it correctly (miles driven divided by gallons used) but only doing it for one or two tankfuls - you are doing it wrong.
You need to do it for many tankfuls over an extended period of time that includes both summer and winter if you want to be accurate. You also cannot think that going 80 mpg on the interstate is comparable with going 65 on the interstate. It's not. With that said:
Stock: 17-21 mpg.
Lightly modded (AT tires, roof rack, etc): 16-20 mpg
Medium mod (Lift, some armor, roof rack, 285 tires): 14-18 mpg
Heavy mod (lift, armor, bumpers, racks, tools, lights, mud tires 285 or bigger) 12-16 mpg.
Pulling a 5K trailer stock: 10-13 mpg.
There you go. These figures above will change somewhat depending on speed and time of year but they are real numbers as submitted by our members.

Fair enough. Just having conversation.
I'm going on the read out, but very well aware this is far from an accurate computation to really know what the true average is. But I figure it's a good metric to use since its very likely what others would use in conversational comparison.
I'm encouraged to see what yours is as I was lightly concerned I had another issue brewing (not sure what it could have been, just a fleeting thought).

If you read this thread I merged yours with, and you read the signature lines of each member, you can immediately see the pattern I presented above.
If people want to compare efficiency then having a thousand threads is not the way to do it. Having one thread with lots of posts is a much better way to compare.

my MPGs have dropped 2.5gal over the past few months for some reason. nothing has changed in that time other than it being summer. won't lie...kinda bums me out seeing 16.5 consistently. didn't notice that kind of drop in my Outback, but maybe it just didn't register as it was a smaller %age.

I average about the same with mixed driving in my TE with stock size KO2s...
Was able to hit 24mpg on my latest road trip through NM,CO, & UT with lots of gear and 2 medium-sized dogs.

I have a 2014 Toyota Trail Edition premium 4wd.
I get between 18mpg hwy and 17mpg in town...

On the way home from picking up my new-to-me 2015 SR5 4x4 I drove ~350 miles from NorCal to Los Angeles. It was quite hot much of the way (90+ degrees) but with just me in the car in a stock vehicle at more-or-less 70mph I got over 22mpg (using GasTracker app). I noticed it dropped quite quickly in the few days I drove it at home on city streets.
