Rear Coil Advice - 2002 SR5 Sport 4WD

I've been searching through some threads but still a bit unclear.
Weak rear coils need replacement but there are a lot of choices and seems like nothing available locally.

It's been suggested to get the taller '99 rear coils.

I posted a WTB in the classifieds (after looking there).

Toyota dealer has the same part number for the '99 coils as the '02 coils. Is there some other way to specify the taller ones? Would the stock coild for the 2002 be enough? Dealer wants $90 per coil and it takes a week to get them.

4Wheel Parts suggested OME's with 1.25", 2" or 3" lift for $155 for the set (a week to get them). Could I go with the 2" OME's, 906's I think, or would that be too tall?

Could get some Autozone Duralast's for $57 each but not sure what I'd be getting.

Tony ive got pretty much the same runner as you minus the sport but have you looked into doing a LC coil lift, you can normally find them for under 100$ for a pair and range from... dont quote me but like 2"-5" in the rear, i did a 8 wrap in the rear and got about 3.5"-4" lift in the rear and got my coils for 70$
hope this help a little, there are tons of thread going on right now with rear lifts so should take to long to find what you need

They are 73.60 apiece at Toyotapartszone.com.

Tony, Sorry for not getting back to in a timely fashion. Don't forget about the front springs, If you install just the rear, you will have excessive rake (rear be much higher then the front).

The part numbers for the front is
FR Springs - Blue / Yellow (48131-35400) Passenger Side
FL Springs - Blue / Pink (48131 - 35350) Driver Side



If you need help installing them, let me know and I'll see if i can help you.

Spring installation should one take about 2 hours at the most for all 4 of them.

Could I get by with just stock height rears or do you think all four should be replaced?

(3) For a couple hundred more get mild 2"-3" lift kit with all coils and shocks, OME or similar.

If I just do (1) will I then notice an issue with the front coils, and will I be wishing I'd done the shocks ... maybe I bite the bullet and do (3).

if you end up going 99 talls, try to get as close to brand new as possible..
with the age of 99 you mind as well get ones with really low mileage or its just better to get them new so they last that much longer. by now im sure a lot of the 99 talls will have a good amount of mileage and put you back where you started.

99s are a good choice if your looking for the best ride closest to stock with a little bit a height added. i went with OMEs and i love them, maybe because they are brand new and considered to my ****ty stock ones they ride much better.. then again i did brand new shocks as well.

The rear springs are the same on either side.

Number 1 is waste of money. It will be almost the same as what you have now.

Number 3 is a personal preference.

Number 2 - I just installed my old 99 springs in my friends 2002 and it raised the front from 33 1/2" to 35 1/2" and it raised the rear from 34 1/4" to 35 1/2"

If choose number 2 - You will have close to if not same ride (minus the bottoming) that you have now.

If you choose number 3 - You will definitely have more of a truck ride.

There again - you will probably get a lot of people on the forum to say to choose 3 - but most people on this forum are into modifying their ride - Don't let the peer pressure get to you.

Don't forget to ask your son what he would like.

I know what my son wants to do ... he just doesn't know it's an option.
I think going with a mild lift, all new coils and shocks, makes the most sense.
We have a few issues to deal with but I expect this 4Runner to be part of the family for a long time.

Looking athe the OME from Toytec I'm thinking 881's up front and 906's in the rear for 2" of lift. That gives minimal drive-line impact so I'm assuming I don't need to worry about modifications/components?

Probably worth the $100 for assembled front struts too since I don't have access to a spring compressor.

Not sure about the rear shock choices of 60027 for comfort or 60028 for additional rear weight ... probably play it safe and go for the 60027.

Well I called Toytec today intending to order up the OME 2" lift kit but the 60027 shocks are back ordered ... probably a couple weeks out.

Haven't seen that kit elsewhere at that price with the assembled front shocks/coils. Anyone know of any other sources or options? Not in a huge hurry but it would be nice to have this done sooner.

Good catch ... I think you're right. The rep on the line told me the 60027's were out of stock and that's what I wanted because they were softer than the 60028's but looking again at the web site I'm seeing the opposite.
One of us is confused. I'll call back again tomorrow.

Ordered up the OME 2" lift kit. The soft rear shocks, p/n 60028, are back-ordered and will ship later but the rest is headed my way.

I have question about putting the 99 tall springs on an 02. Concerning the stock springs on the 02, drivers side is 338mm, passenger is 344mm. The 99 talls are drivers 374mm and passenger 368. So I assume when installing the 99 talls on an 02 I should switch sides; put drivers side on passenger and vice versa is this correct?

Difference in height of front springs

So, been reading this thread, and plan on putting the 99 tall springs on my 02 4runner. My question is about the different heights of the front springs. Acording the dealer:

02 stock
Drivers 338 mm
Pass 344 mm

99 stock
Drive 374 mm
Pass 368 mm

As you can see they are opopposite, passenger side is taller than the drivers and vice versa. It would make sense to install the 99 coils on the opposite side. Has anyone one run into this?

Rear coil spring confusion

Hi guys, I’m looking to put new rear coils on my 02 sr5 4wd and I want to keep it stock height. I’m running Bilstein 5100 up front with original factory springs set on the lowest perch.
I have the rear 5100 shocks but want to decide on what coil to use before I install the new shocks.
Questions-
1- did 02 4 runners have forward rake when new from factory?

2- when I look at Toyota parts on line using Vin number it gives me part no-
48321-35200 but it says for 15 inch wheel and I have 16 inch wheels which I know came on the car from new as my father in law purchased it new.

Then if I don’t enter the vin it gives option for part number 48231-35250 which says for 01-02 limited 4wd with 16 inch wheels.

Does anyone know the difference between the two coils?

If I use the part number that matches the Vin Will it remove the slight rear end sag and give me slight rake forward?

Or if I use the coil for the limited Will it give me a little more lift and possibly greater load capacity ?

OME 2906 or 906 in the rear are a great spring for 1"-2"

the 906 springs are great and provide just a touch of rake and ride great. It's probably what your after.
