Rear Diff Breather Mod - Complete!

Has anyone used something like this? Thoughts?

If I am not mistaken, the only 2 you need to re-route higher are the rear diff and the elocker, the rest are all routed high in the engine compartment.
If you get water that high, you will have more to worry about than differentials.

that manifold with the polyethylene filter is pretty trick for the jack compartment. to date, i don't think i've ever seen anyone use the ARB 4-port manifold. i think it uses a sintered filter: ARB Differential Breather Kit (170112)

there's also this kit from Air-on-Board: 4 Port Diff Breather -Air On Board

this is on my to-do list.

I am a big believer in doing it right the first time or not doing it at all, for longevity and quality the ARB kit has been added onto to do list. Thank you for the link.
 
So I pulled the wrong hole plug and drilled it. I can no longer read the part number on it. Can anyone help me figure out the part number for the hole plug in the image below. I'd like to order a replacement.

I think I found the right replacement part. It's Hole Plug 90950-01959 if anyone else happens to make the same mistake.
 
Type of Tube

Do you have to use fuel line for this mod? I want to run mine the length of the car up to the engine bay but that stuff gets expensive. I was just curious if i could use some plain old poly tube wrapped in plastic wire loom? Its not really holding anything other than a low air pressure correct?

Don't run it all the way to the front- waste of money/time IMO.

Run the line up behind the driver's side tail-light and strap-tie it up there. Done.

Oh yeah - some of the poly tube gets very brittle- best to use fuel line.
 
I actually routed mine up inside the bumper by the gas cap. I just left it inside the bumper instead of cutting into the gas cap area.
 
I realize this is an older thread, but my question still applies. How exactly does this relocation help since the 1 way valve is still in place, only higher? Won't a negative pressure still cause water to be sucked in from the rear diff seals?

This seems to have been glossed over in this thread, and I see this mistake a lot on trail rigs. The entire point of relocating the breather is to be able to replace that cap (which acts as a check valve) with a filter. You should really replace all of them with filters.

This way, when you drive through water and your axle cools, the air contracting will draw in fresh air through the filter and not water through the axle seals.
 
Axle and e-Locker breather

Having read only the first page of this and other threads on the subject I thought I had all the parts needed to run a tube up into the gas filler compartment. Now I realize I need another piece of tube and a tee coupler to include the e-locker breather. Thanks for the photos posted above by [MENTION=3442]Boyds4Runner[/MENTION] .
 
Just food for thought. Did this mod on past vehicles, Did it last weekend on my 2016 Trail and the only conclusion i could come to was that the clamps weren't tight or something as all the off road lights started glitching and the traction control too as i was driving down the highway. SUPER SKETCH. Replaced it back to factory in a parking lot and it was fine after that. Going with the ARB breather kit. Best to do it right the first time on the new rig.

Can you explain to me (all of us) how doing the Rear Diff Breather Mod would cause issues, even a loose clamp, to affect 2 completely different systems to malfunction?

This is not related to the install of the rear diff mod, unless you did something really hokey!

You stated you "Did this mod on past vehicles", did you ever have any issues like you describe? More than likely the answer is "NO".

How can an ARB breather kit do anything any differently, as far as function of the mod? Yes maybe different parts are used, but it still "functions" the same.

Have you read anyplace in this thread where someone's mod caused anything like this? The answer is "NO".

I guess I am just trying to point out the obvious that this mod didn't cause these issues if done even mostly correctly, so someone new doesn't come along and say......... well, you get the picture!

To be more specific...The computer was flashing all the crawl controls and terrain setting from the overhead controls as well as the traction control break vibrations. It was literally the only thing I had touched on the truck. Not sure if the computer system could sense a change of pressure in the differential or what, but it was 100% caused by me relocating the breather. I don't know exactly how, but I replaced the stock breather with the correct part, attached and clamped the hose and relocated the breather into the jack compartment, exactly how it is shown hundreds of times on threads. I did the exact same on an FJ and had no issues so the only conclusion i could come to was something wasn't snug or tight and causing a weird pressure internally. I stopped removed everything and reinstalled the factory breathers and it was all 100% fine after. Your perception is up to you. I was equally shocked...and to point fingers and conclude I lack experience purely because My membership icon says junior member is ignorant in itself....I wouldn't post bullshit just to post bullshit.

Your posting your experience in such a way that it reads like the breather relocation is the cause of your issues. Simply put its not unless you can explain why, there is no pressure feedback on the rear differential and those systems are not related. correlation does not mean causation

That's strange, maybe your vehicle has something, sensor or such that sends a signal back to the ECU. Mine doesn't and I don't think they added anything since 2014.

Breather doesn't cause faulty electircal signals.

The E-Locker breather tube is wrapped in the same plastic split tube electric bundle as the electrical connection to the unit. Together they curve around to the top of the frame cross bar directly in front of the spare tire. The electrical bundle leads to a connector plug that's mounted on top of the cross bar. At that point the tube exits the bundle and loops over the cross bar, down and back up to the E-Locker breather cap. The breather is about 6" to 8" behind the axle breather. If you connect the tube to a typical tube connector and use a metal hose clamp it could contact one or more of the electrical lines and short out the circuit. To prevent this I wrapped mine in electrical tape before placing the line back up on top of the frame, next to the electrical connection plug.

Guys , just throwing this out there , I would not use the factory end one way valve , been working with Toyota axles for a long time and have seen them plug on even pavement queens , the oil mist/ vapors gets around the little rubber valve and dust and dirt stick to it and the little spring and after so much gets on them it renders them useless and they plug ,

I have always put a cheap ole see through gas filter on the end and never had an issue and keeps dust out when axle sucks in air .

I have seen the factory ones suck both open and closed
Not really an issue if it sticks open and its elevated above any water crossings , the problem is when it sticks closed first thing that leaks is the pinion seal.

I don't get the scuba manifold and what that does?

As Saker said previously, "It is a manifold with a filter that will allow pressure to equalize within the differential. It has multiple ports for installing more than one hose." It is just a way to connect multiple hoses to one valve.
