Rear Diff Breather Mod - Complete!

I posed the question of necessity of diff breathers to the Expidion Overland guys and here is their(Jeff's) take:

"Great questions! Diff breathers are good to have even in shallow water crossings. Depending on current, vehicle speed, and debris it doesn't take much to submerge your rear axle housing and diff breather. Often times your front diff and transmission breather are routed up into the engine bay. This is usually a safe height for moderate water crossings. However your rear diff breather is on the axle housing and is susceptible to taking on water even in low depths. A common and easy solution is to extend the breather up next to the fuel fill cap. You can do this with either a kit or DYI with an assortment of parts. Aftermarket breathers are often times an open intake with a filter and stock breathers are a one way pressure valve. Jeff"

Does anyone know if the front diff uses the same barb union as the rear, or is there a difference? Thanks.
 
Nevermind, looks like the front diff is already extended to underneath the fuse block, and the trans and tcase are at the bottom of the engine compartment someplace. I'll probably just fuel them all into one filter up high on the firewall.
 
Just did the rear, fed some tubing out from where the factory jack is, behind the plastic in the inner wheel-well, and then along the fuel tank filler pipe. Used a K&N in-line fuel filter, it's a paper media material and lets air pass both directions. Should stay clean in this location regardless but it's an extra level of protection and was super inexpensive.

I have the ARB kit to install on the rear breathers. Has anyone had any problems with gear oil fumes when locating the manifold/filter inside the jack compartment..?

nope, you will be good to go with the arb kit.

I had fumes when installing the kit, but once I connected it to the arb filter block, the fumes disappeared.
 
Ok, so I did this today, running both to the tool/jack compartment.
Very easy but I'm not satisfied with the rubber body seal. Ill need a better solution than just cutting it. It may be that trying to pass two lines thought it at an angle and still maintain a seal is too much and/or some kind of right angle fitting is needed...

Does anyone know what the name of just the filter is? Just the white filter.

I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find any. I wanted to make my own setup and figured that was some sort of micron level ceramic filter but can't seem to stumble on one with any manner of amazon, Google, T4R, search.

I've tried ceramic filter, air stone, candle filter, miniature candle filter threaded, dome filter, ceramic dome micron, aquarium stone, aquarium filter dome, ...

I'm really at a loss as to what that thing could be named. Apparently is something readily available, I see them as parts of kits everywhere but can't seem to land a link for one.

If anyone has one are there any part numbers, manufacture name, even dimensions might help.

You mean these or something very very similar?


I was thinking of putting together the 2 port manifolds (4 port shown) and the filter and selling them if there was enough interest.....

Yes, I couldn't figure out what they were called and finally found them by looking for sintered brass filters.

I was thinking of just using a small Hammond aluminum box. Drill and tap as needed.... and you could keep a couple spare fittings / filters inside if desired.

You would be better off using a manifold or connecting the hose and filter together with a coupling.
The box is going to be thin and parts are going to rattle like crazy.....:pop2:

How will the parts rattle? You mean spare parts? That was just an after thought. But the 'in use' parts would be attached to the box. Or rather attached inside the box with air / drain holes drilled.

Guitar players have been stomping on those boxes for as long as most people on this forum have been alive. I've seen some rough one's but not sure I've actually seen one destroyed. The Hammond 1590 box is actually now known as a "stomp box" for standing up to that type abuse and protecting hundreds of dollars of electronics inside.

So everything would be secured. No rattles that I can imagine, and the filters / valves would be protected from damage.... unless I'm missing something here.

So this is my first post, just got the 4Runner 5 days ago, so please have mercy if this is ridiculous.

I've read all the major threads (all excellent write ups) on the diff breather mod and I gather there are three locations being used to route the breather:
1) under the hood, on the inside of the fender
2) into the jack compartment
3) into the gas cap area

1) seems like the most robust option, but requires a lot of hose if your are parting out the kit yourself. 2) & 3) seem to either be a pain to route, place it into the gas cap area which is not very clean, or compromise the integrity of a seal into the cabin. Which leads me to my question:

Has anyone considered running it up the gas fill tube and terminating it on the INTERIOR side of the gas cap assembly?
  • it gets to the same height
  • it is still contained inside the vehicle so protected from dust and dirt that accumulates inside the gas cap area
  • its tucked up inside the quarter panel which seems pretty much sealed at the top, thus I anticipate that not much dust or dirty settles up in there or migrates up there at all...

Thoughts? I just bought the Toyota parts today, when they arrive I'll give it a shot.
