Rear Disc Brake Conversion Kit

I’m not saying the ABS wouldn’t activate. I’m saying it may be overactive.

What was your stopping distances pre and post the conversion? Did you see meaningful improvement?

I ran a couple of test down the road @ 20 mph no difference

I also ran a couple @ 50 mph or so but I could not see any difference.

both of these tests had the tundra fronts and it was only in general. so they were within 10 ft of each other for sure.

I was not able to see any real difference between the two setup ups.

My only concern from the vid I posed.. the out of the box Toyota rear Ebrake setup will lockup the rears. emergency/drift brake. the mustang calipers will not lockup. I'm messing with getting a force multiplier for my setup right now to see if I can get a slight 2x force advantage and get the rears to lockup. it's not that the mustang calipers can't lockup the rears because I can make them do it with the foot pedal.

I want the rears to lockup if I yank on the ebrake.

The entire purpose of the ebrake is to be able to duke boy it around the corners in the winter.

That's what I was thinking too. You need some more mechanical advantage than what the factory e-brake lever is designed to provide.

This is due to the drum brake geometry being self energizing. Hence you don't need much force on the e-brake cable to properly activate the drums.

Disks are a differently story. They do require a lot of pressure - that's why power brakes are needed for disks. (older cars like my air-cooled VW with drums on all 4 corners don't even need powered brakes)
 
The springs on the Mustang calipers for the parking brake are pretty hefty. It takes some decent force with a set of pliers to compress them in order to get the cable end in place. Once everything is connected, you're asking the parking brake lever to compress two of these springs.
 
The interest in a parking brake kit has been pretty overwhelming so I'm trying to get this going ASAP. I added information for a parking brake kit to the original post. Please review it and let me know if you're interested. I plan to start ordering parts soon to get these together. My intention is to get the kits ready to ship with the brackets so you have everything you need for a complete install in one shipment.

I only do it where nobody else can be harmed by my stupidity, generally I only do it when I'm alone. usually at very low speeds. lifted 4wd trucks are not know for their "do not flip over" powers.

that said my son who is 14 has been known to ask for a little Tokyo drift cool guy time.

I will never forget the first time I did it with him in the truck. He said "Why did you just do that?" I replied "because it's fun?" he then said "can we go around the block and do it again?" as with most things like this I said "heck we can go around 4x times"

Parking brake kit

You have a closer pic of the kit? I'm trying to figure a rear kit I already have. But the ebrake portion is what I dont have yet. It used all toyota sequoia rear rotors, calipers, ebrake=internal shoe. Only bad thing is that they used 2 ebrake cable vs 3gen 4runner which used 1 cable. The kit is a SOS performance kit fyi

I have all custom brake lines on the rear axle of my 4Runner because it’s a Diamond housing. But I’ve been installing this kit on my parts 4Runner to verify stock fitment and develop instructions.

I do recommend cutting and flaring the brake lines. The reason is because the stock inverted flare fittings have a section at the end that isn’t threaded. This causes a thread engagement of only about 1.5-2 threads into the adapter fitting. I’ll be including new inverted flare fittings in the kit so that this can be addressed.

Definitely curious about this setup. I'm going to wait for the others to give some feedback. Is this something you will be offering down the road, say in a 3-6 months?

I too have the 231mm front tbu, what brake master cylinder did you put in, and how difficult was it to install?

I'd say there's a good chance it will still be offered in 3-6 months. We'll see how well the demand signal is maintained.

I'm running a 1.125 bore Ford master cylinder that wasn't very difficult to install. Do you still have ABS?

Yeah I do. It never really been a big deal to me since my runner is a secondary vehicle and doesn't see a ton of miles. My only concern was if the stock setup could run 231mm front and disc in the rear.
