Rear Disk Brake Conversion Pt 1

Wow. Really?? So all the time and trouble originally thought for this is a simple swap now?

Jason, don't missunderstand, we are simply talking about the Rotor itself. Everything else stays the same as far as work goes. If you chose to use the 4th gen rotor you will have to design a different bracket than the one shown in this thread. If you chose to use the Montaro rotors you can use the bracket but will need to drill out or counter sink the lug holes on the back side of the rotor.

But the cutting of the backing plate and the making of soft lines for the brake calipers will still need to be done.
 
Well I'm finally gonna bite the bullet and do this. Just pulled my axle shafts today to fix some leaky seals and the backing plate on both of them is rusted through. Out comes the cut off tool. I hate drums anyways.
 
I actually had to drill my Montero rotors as well. I measured the factory Toyota holes and got the drill bit from Home Depot. I think it was 9/16th. Was like 12$ and you aren't taking much off them.

So the extra step in drilling out the rotor isn't an issue, but to clarify, exactly what studs are you using? The stock or those off the front of an '85 runner?

I actually had to drill my Montero rotors as well. I measured the factory Toyota holes and got the drill bit from Home Depot. I think it was 9/16th. Was like 12$ and you aren't taking much off them.

Yes just one extra step of drilling or countersinking the holes. We are using the stock studs. The 85 front studs were for comparison on how they were made. Sorry for the confusion.
 
Finally getting after it this week! I noticed that you seemed to use longer bolts that are oriented opposite of the stock bolts when you mounted the axel flange to the axel housing to secure the caliper bracket. Does that sound right? Are those a specific kind of bolt?

yes the upper bolts are longer because the caliper bracket mounts to them on the back side. I just got Automotive grade bolts from ACE hardware. Post up some pics as you go. Glad your joining the club. :biggrin2:
 
Holy smokes this has been an ordeal. Axle seals, wheel bearings, mounting rotor only to find one of the axles is bent, find replacement, install again, fabbed brackets needed further trimming...BUT...! All that's left to do is connect the brake lines, bleed and good to go.

Out of curiosity, I had to file down the caliper to make it wide enough to accommodate the pads and rotor. I asked for the rotors off the rear of a '94 montero sport as you said you did but these are literally about 3 millimeters too thick. What do you think? Was I given the wrong rotors possibly? I remember seeing almost somewhere in this thread that other montero rotors were just a couple kilometers too thick to fit in the mustang calipers. I'll also post pics once I figure out how to do it from my phone.

My Calipers were really close but I didn't have to file anything but It took some work to get the caliper shimmed correctly to be centered on the Rotor. But I don't think it will hurt anything that you did. Congratulations and welcome to the rear disk brake club.
 
Long time car guy and have always wanted to grab a 3rd gen. Let's just say I don't like the rear drums. I was super surprised to see pretty much no developed kits.

However... I did come across tons of the Gen 1/2 brackets. Is the hub bolt pattern the same on these or not? These things are all over the place and ceap. Hell if even one hole lined up on the hub you could drill the other.

Thoughts?

As far as bolting to the axle housing the bolt "should" be the same spread and so those should be able to be used. With that said it was pretty easy to build the caliper bracket that I did and posted dimensions here in the thread. It also depends on what caliper those are setup for.

i know this because i have 2 one automatic with abs and one manual transmission with no abs ...both are v6 both have rear disk.... my friend have 4 cylinder model with rear drum brake

Biggest issue I see is that the bracket will interfere with the ABS sensor

There's a thread which says the hub bolts patterns are the same between 1-2-3 gens. So hypothetically we can find the right bracket for a 2nd gen and use it on our 3rd gens.

I've looked at a couple videos and appears to be so. However the rotor is provisioned with parking brake shoes in mind, so the swap might be more complicated than it looks.

True but you live where you can source them they are not sold in North America so getting a rear axle or even the parts is much harder than it might seem. Basically it is the same backing plate that the 4th gen use but at the correct width for our 3rd gen.

I've looked at a couple videos and appears to be so. However the rotor is provisioned with parking brake shoes in mind, so the swap might be more complicated than it looks.

I think the hardest part would be to source the parts. But now with Front Range off Road's Drotor it is simply a matter of cost.

But for those of us on a budget this is not a bad way to go.

Good call on the ABS, I could not understand why they never listed 3rd gen as the pattern appeared the same (thanks for confirmation). These use a factory Toyota caliper and would work if you cut off one of the tabs, that said, no e brake.

The Prado options seems the best, wish I had a connection overseas that would pull a full setup off and send it over. The consumables are available in the states, just not the backing plates, parking drums etc.

I believe you might be able to get the parts from amayama. I've got couple parts numbers from the toyo diy website quoted earlier, but I don't want to bite the bullet and buy OEM calipers on a unproven concept haha.
