Rear hatch opener melted!

Hey guys,

So I have noticed over the past few months that the rubber grip over the rear hatch opener button was getting sticky. I thought something got on it and didn't give it much attention. Well today when I went to open it my fingers sunk into it and I pulled my hand back covered in a sticky black goo. It was over 100 degrees here in Houston today and I guess the rubber button cover couldn't handle the heat. It has completely melted. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know the part number to replace it?

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks

It's probably just rotted or somehow the grease or some solvent leaked or the wiring got too hot and melted it. 100 degree heat should not melt rubber. That is really strange, though am curious to see if anyone else has had this problem.

The same thing has happened to my wife's 2007 Sienna. I too think it is the heat. This has not happened to my 4runner but it is garaged during the day where as the Sienna is always outside.

Ya I saw that, did you figure out if that 45 dollar part was correct? Right now I have tape on it to keep the sticky off my fingers...

I hat eto revive an old thread. But this same problem is currently going on with my 4runner I have read both post. But there was never and solution posted on what needs to be done. If anyone fixed theres... Did you just get the part from the dealer? or is there somewhere else i can purchase it? If so do you have the part number and a place to buy it?

Thanks

Sticky rear hatch opener

I have an 07 Sr5 and the same thing has happened to mine. I live in S. Florida and it gets crazy hot down here. I thought it was the heat also. I would like to change it out or something. Does anyone know if it could be switched out and how much?

Noticed the same thing with mine - plenty hot. Went 90 days at or above 90! It is not so bad that I bothered looking at it. But do feel it getin worse. Anyone got a parts pix?

according to the thread over on 120 drbiii backorderd the part from his local stealership and will post the part number when he gets it and confirms it is correct. I think he said its 60 bucks....

That's correct. I reserved the part from my dealership. The parts manager told me he should be recieving them soon since they ordered a few of them about 3 weeks ago. He said the part was $59 and change.

I didn't get a chance to get the part number, but once I get the part in my possession I'm going to post the part # and hopefully and DIY for removing the switch and replacing it.

I have a 2008 Sport with 25K miles that has always been garage kept. I live in the DFW TX area and my hatch opener has also melted! I guess I should take it to the stealership for replacement since it is under factory warranty.

Dealership is going to replace under warranty! - They said they had never seen that happen before.

Part came in today, and the dealership put it on in just a few minutes. The service advisor said that they have had a few more 4Runners with the same issue come in in the last few days, and the part is now on back order. I'm just glad I don't get black sticky goo on my fingers anymore! I hope this one lasts longer that 2 years...

Crud no! I never thought to ask. I never actually saw the part, and come to think of it I never got any paperwork with it either. However I think it is part #9 in the below diagram:
