Rear hatch opener melted!

ToyotaOwners.com just updated my service from the other day. Not sure if this will help or not:

Not sure if this is happening only to folks with 2007 4Runners, but I've heard of the same thing happening on 2007 Priuses and the earlier post in this thread also mention Siennas. Sounds like Toyota got a bad batch of rubber for the rear gate switches!

Hey guys,

So I have noticed over the past few months that the rubber grip over the rear hatch opener button was getting sticky. I thought something got on it and didn't give it much attention. Well today when I went to open it my fingers sunk into it and I pulled my hand back covered in a sticky black goo. It was over 100 degrees here in Houston today and I guess the rubber button cover couldn't handle the heat. It has completely melted. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know the part number to replace it?

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks
I had this exact same problem!!! Now that the weather is cold, it is hard as a rock and makes it difficult to push to release the latch! I'm checking on replacing the pad, but if you have any other advice, please post!!!

Did anyone find out if Toyota will cover this issue under warranty? Since this is a defect, I would think they should cover it. My local dealership quoted me approximately $200 for replacement; told me that it wasn't covered. I think that's a lot for something that should be covered due to a defect of Toyota parts.

Talked with Dealer Today about this issue

I've had this same problem with my 2007 4runner and have ignored because it has been warm enough that the switch has still worked. Now it's cold in FL and the switch doesn't work at all now. The dealer quoted me a list price of $65 and said that Toyota was not doing a recall on this part, but they've had multiple issues with this part failing in the field. Lucky for me my warranty ran out before this issue arose. I did find it only for around $43. Do you think the heat is what is causing the issue or do you think a ton of road grim gets caught on it and the part just begins to deteriorate?

Anyone know if Toyota is covering this beyond reg warranty period?

You know, i was a little upset that this thing melts ! Seeing that this was assembled in the same lexus plant(one of the reasons i bought this) where they make the GX 460 i am curious if this also happens to the GX.

Anyways, i called Toyota headquarters and told them nicely that even though i am out of warranty, i think this is still a defective part. I said that a handle melting by itself isnt because of wear and tear, but due to a defective part/quality.

Toyota then asked me who my dealer was and... then the dirt came out.

I used to go to the dealer ever since i bought my vehicle and i seemed happy(but was always wondering what oil they used, as even after the oil change i didnt notice much difference). So it was time for a 30,000 mile service and of course i left the vehicle with them for one whole day, asking my friend to pick me up and drop me after work... etc.I picked up the vehicle after the service and i wondered if the oil ever got changed as there was no difference. After a couple of days, i got really curious and checked the dipstick and lo and behold, the oil was dark black !!!

I immediately went to the castrol oil place, changed the oil and took a sample of the old oil in a glass bottle and went to the dealer.

When i confronted him he said, its been a few days so it can get that black. I placed the bottle in his desk and asked does it get this black? Then i looked at the 30k service reciept and saw that thet had charged me labour for the oil change but not the oil.

The dealer went into a acting course, explaining to me how they were filled up for the day and had asked a mechanic to take the vehicle out and get the oil changed from the local castrol oil change place. And that the "minimum wage" making mechanic had just gone for a joy ride in my car and didn't change the oil.

I then asked him if the rest of the work on the car was done? Because it was the 30k service and i had got the bill for around $500.00.

The stealer then offered me free service.. blah blah blah...

I got my money back from the oil change and cussed him out and told him point blank that they were cheating. And most importantly, after i changed the oil with castrol, i couldnt believe how smooth it runs !!!!! So for 30k i have used cruddy oil from the dealer and i regret it.

Now back to the rear hatch melting...

So when Toyota asked me why i didnt go to the dealer.. i told them the whole story. Toyota said the are making a note about that dealer and that i still need to go to the dealer so they can inspect it and file a case number for toyota to note the issue and also replace it irrespective of warranty. They even called the dealer and told them i will be visiting shortly.

So i go visit my Stealer about this. The service manager there is mad at me for not coming to them anymore (and plunking down money for work they never do) and of course for pointing out their stealing techniques. He replies very casually.. "My technician needs to analyse the handle and file a report, so bring it on monday and leave it here for a day"

I told him that, its a matter of looking and touching the handle which takes like 5 minutes and not a day. He insisted that i leave the vehicle.I am really scared as i dont want him touching my car anymore, that too when i am not there. There is a good change he will screw something else out of anger. So i have to call toyota back and ask them to fix me up with another dealer with whom i have no no such quibble.

Sometimes i wonder if i can just order the part, put it on and be done with it. But i was curious to see how Toyota handled the issue. They did good, but the frigging stealers are spoiling the show for them !

Thought i would share another one of those "Stealership" stories.

Hey Krravi, youre not alone, bro...

I had a dealership in central MA that I used to go to for all my services, and i trusted them to do right by me, but there were def, corners cut. Mine revolves around the 4Runner's OEM bug guard / hood protector. Now, look,...before people jump down my throat...i realize youre taking a gamble with these products, as they are well known for doing damage to thehood DIRECTLY due to wind pushing the metal brackets into the steel edge of the hood. However, at the time, i didnt know this...and my wife bought me the OEM hood protector kit for xmas one year. So i brought mine in for a routine oil change, and asked them to put it on. $20 to do it, thats fine, cuz i didnt wanna miss anything....but they missed something! They didnt put the silicone discs that go directly on the hood to create a seperation between the hood and bracket. So one day when im washing the car at home, i look and i see a damn indent in the hood! I take the hood protector off, and i nearly fainted from the damage i saw! I called toyota to see if there's any clause about damage from OEM equipment (my old VW had this clause with the OEM "bra"). So when i filed a "complaint" with Toyota, i didnt know it would come back to me...

On the next service, when i pulled my ride into the service bay, the guys who were all smiles and joking around turned their heads and saw me....and it was if i was an ex girlfriend they had a bad breakup with...their smiles disappeared in less than a second for a frown, and they wouldnt make eye contact with me. The guy who works at the service desk said, "yeah, they called and really reamed us out, and our manager gave us a good tongue-lashing too". Id be lying if i said something to the effect of "i felt bad" but jeez, i had to wire brush, clean, prime 3x, paint 3x, clearcoat 3x, and create my own "seperators" with the silicone bumpers (that you put on chair feet so they dont scratch a nice floor) so its ALWAYS seperated from the hood.

Sorry for rambling...but these "grudges" happen...and its unprofessional for them to NOT "step up" and make the customer happy and WANT to return (and pay out the $$$ they charge).

I went to the dealer today to enquire about the rear hatch handle. He immediately replied that i am out of warranty. Then i told him that i called Toyota. Everything changed after that. He said that he will replace it free, out of goodwill.

Thanks Toyota ! :)

What did Toyota say about the melted opener, that it should be replaced for free? How many miles do you have on your 4Runner?

I have 55000 miles. Toyota said that they cant guarantee anything but they can talk to the dealer.Since its out of warranty there are no hard and fast rules for replacing it and its handled on a case by case basis.

I think the dealer has to take the initiative more than Toyota and then file the claim to Toyota.

But the dealer asked me to leave the car tommorow while he fixes it. I will know tommorow.

Update: Just left the car at the dealer and also asked him to change the differential and transfer case fluids as i am at 50k miles. Thought i had to give him some billable work which i needed done anyway, for a smooth transaction.

Well the dealer fixed the hatch, no charge. But billed me like 200 bucks for the differential and transfer case oil change.

I guess after all he got me one way or the another. But i am glad that i got both done.

Another melted hatch opener in Houston

Same story here. I see the part is only $46 online. To me, that is not worth my time arguing to some Service Manager at a Toyota stealership. I will buy the part and lower my opinion of Toyota. By the way, I am buying a BMW x5 this week. My wife wanted another 4runner (to replace this one) but I would not let her buy another after this experience. Gladly paying $20K more than the Toyota to get something with more integrity behind it.

Must be a Chinese made part. Reminds me of a huge problem Rocky boots had a couple years ago. Many many people had the rubber soles of their boots just melt away and it was not because of heat. No one knew what it was, but likely a problem from a rubber supplier. I would not blame Toyota, but they should fix it no questions asked because this is a true defect.

Make sure you have a repair fund set aside when the warranty expires! Mileage sucks on those even in the underpowered 3.3, the 4.4? is a BLAST!

It is fun as hell to drive though. Took a road trip in a 2010, 6 hours in the X5 felt like 2.5 in the 4runner. Solid as a rock at 85mph.

Not fun for local driving though.

Yep, i have an '07 in Dallas, TX and it's the heat...incredible that this can be the issue...it's a defect and should be replaced even if out of warranty, but not sure if it will.

Question though, will it happen again?

Anyone know the part # for the melted latch? Mine's been this way for about 2 years but I feel if left like this I won't be able to use the rear hatch.
