Rear Liftgate Struts Blown

My 2010 blew one at about 18 months old, oil runnering down it. Got replaced under warranty not problem. Now that you mention it, it did just notice that the rear window is noisy when going up and down. I'll see if cleaning it works, if not I'll mention it when it goes back to the deal for a service and TSB on the headlamps.

There is definitely oil in em, when mine blew I first noticed due to the oil streak on the bumper covering.

The struts are composed of a really heavy spring, compressed gas, and oil.

If you go on any forum on just about any product, read the issues and take them at face value you would never buy that product because "everything" bad happens to "every" one of said product. It would be nice to not have to parse the data to determine if the problem is real or just an anomaly.

Gotcha. Point well taken.

By way of update, I sent a note to Toyota of America and they noted that it's out of warranty but will work with my local dealer customer rep to try to make it right. So far so good...
 
Blown

My struts are blown as of this morning with less than 23K miles on it!
One more thing to take care of :)
 
One of my rear struts just crapped the bed... Noticed oil stains on bumper too.

I am at 39K so no warranty work for me. Bad news is Toyota wants 170 bucks apiece...pricy.

Anybody have a lead on some reasonably priced aftermarket ones?

I've been meaning to give an update on the struts since I've had em on for a while now. So far they work just as well as the day I put them on. You cannot beat the price either.

I'll get the info sent off to Jesse1983 to be posted in the mods sticky section.

5th gen Limited, 4 months old, tailgate lifters blew. Every dealer I called wants one visit for an assessment, and another visit for repairs once the parts come in. What stinks is that none of the dealers provide loaner vehicles.

did you read any of the posts in this thread? skip the OEM crap and get the $17 a pop deal. $34 to not have to deal with the stealership is worth it

Exactly. The HD ones I sourced should work plenty fine as an OEM replacement as well as for those who have GOBI ladders.

For $34 a pair you cannot beat it. So far they have been great for me, and you could replace these things 5 times before you got up to the price that Toyota charges for OEM struts. It takes about 5 minutes, a partner, and a small flat blade screw driver to swap em out. If anyone need help shoot me a PM and I'll walk ya through it. Be careful when you swap the struts though, that hatch is daaaaaamn heavy so having your little 105 lb girlfirend / wifey hold the hatch up may not be the best choice. :zoom:
 
oh cool.. will definitely go the HD struts route! when I skimmed the thread and saw the word "struts" I pictured "suspension" and thought the discussion had gone off topic. d'oh

* update *

ordered a pair of the HD struts, ~$45 w/shipping for 2. Lift Supports Will post back in a month to report how they work

* update 2 *

install took 2 minutes total. HD struts fit perfectly. the new struts are slightly louder (air sucking sound), not much harder to close, but dang... holds the hatch SOLID!

* update 3 *

Had them for about a month. NO COMPLAINTS! Work like a champ. If a girl or girly man tries to close the hatch, they usually need to use both hands. This might be an issue if a woman is one-arming a child and trying to close the hatch. Otherwise - great mod!

Very superstitious but here it goes; 11K with no issues with the hatch. The window rubber sounds rough sometimes but I chalk that up to the fact that its dry here in CA and intend to get them looked at before the warranty expires.
 
Dirt builds up real easy in the rear window rubber channels. Take a damp rag and go across the channel a couple of times. You will be amazed of the amount of crud there. After cleaning, try your window, it should be pretty quite. Be Safe.

My replacements are working like a champ and saved me a ton of cash over the alternatives.
