Rear Liftgate Struts Blown

2010 Limited with 49000 km and both struts dead. Just about took the wife's head off, lucky I caught it in time:wow:

Dealer is replacing them under warranty, told me they were $300 a pop! Glad there is a way cheaper alternative when they will inevitably fail again.

Not that I would buy them at the dealer but come on, really, $300?

Just as I've stated earlier, a safety hazard...I think Toyota needs to take a look at this...this failure seem to becoming more common!
 
There are two different part numbers for the rear struts. One for vehicles with the premium sound system and another for cars without it.

I read thru posts and did not see this mentioned; maybe I missed it. Anyway if you have a problem maybe you could get them to use the heavier duty struts.

I don't know the part numbers. My buddy at Toyota just told me what I quoted above. He said he thought it something to do with the vehicles with the premium sound system because that system must have amp, heavier speakers or something to that effect.

Edited: If I had to guess I bet one with #8 in it is heavy duty strut.

2008 Toyota 4runner rear hatch struts

Bought two new struts for my 2008 4runner on ebay that were "WAS" brand. I paid $49 for the pair, they were easy to install, and work just like the origionals.
 
Mine blew out yesterday without the slightest warning.
Of course I was at costco and it was raining. That suckers heavy when trying to hold with one hand and load a case of Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA with the other.
I got 3 weeks left of my 3 year coverage. Phew!
With the design refresh coming and the warranty issues, I'm starting to consider a trade-in on a 2013 TE...hmmm, maybe a magnetic grey this time....
 
This morning my 2010 LE with 55k worked just fine, 25 minutes ago..the left one died with no warning...

Very frustrating, though not as bad as the one above my post (ironically I was at Costco this morning)!

After fiddling to figure out what the hell was wrong, the next thing I did was jump on here and found this thread. Will order the LS's as my next service isnt for another couple thousand miles and well outside the warranty.

Just got them and were the easiest to pop out and in and worked like a champ. Once again thanks to the forum I found the problem and saved a good amount of cash with the fix!
 
I love how you had your's fail, ordered replacements, and did the R&R while I waited for my dealer to finally fix mine. Took 3 visits and 6 hrs of wait time for my "free" repair.
BTW the dealer said normally the parts are $300 and the labor is $110. ROFL.
...and he said the new ones are only covered for 1 more year.
Definitely should have listened to you guys and gone aftermarket. BTW, while walking the lot I saw a Silver '13 TE with KDSS and NO nav for $39k asking.

2012 4runner sr5 blew out around 14k, went to the dealer about a month later, showed them, no question was asked, waited two days for parts, takes about an hour for the 15k service and to replace those.

On vacation this weekend I went to get some stuff out of the back of the 4Runner. Thought I must have water skied too much! I could not lift the hatch. Looks like my struts went out too. 48000 mi. Thanks SocalTrail for the mod...new ones are on order. Glad I don't have to pay the toyota price.
 
Interested to hear what others are finding, but I installed the aftermarket struts a couple of weeks ago on my 2012 TE (anticipating the Gobi ladder install) and found that the new, aftermarket units do not appear to be any larger or stronger than the stock units.

Is it possible Toyota switched struts on more recent models to a stronger unit and this is what I came across on m 2012?
 
Another failure here

Mine failed the day before a trip, just two weeks ago. 34k so I went ahead and had them replaced under warranty, but have bookmarked the aftermarkets.

Sure a weak spot in the vehicle..
 
How many of you guys that have had the struts blow tend to leave the tailgate up while camping or whatever? Seems like I get a lot of dust and sand on the pistons and it's not wiping clean when closing. I wonder if I can install a felt washer or dust covers.
My new ones took a pounding this weekend, I had the back open 4 or 5 hours a day for 4 days. The last day really felt like metal on metal when I closed it.
