Rear Liftgate Struts Blown

My '11 Trail is around 27,000 miles and the rear lift gate struts have crapped out as well. It's been like that for the last 6 months or so but haven't bother to go down to the stealership to get it looked it.

Finally took it down the other day to have a state inspection done, and they said the lift gate struts were blown. Dealership, order the parts and put them in free of charge this morning. Parts & labor under warranty. Somehow, according to the tech, my tires have gained 6/32" of rubber since last year's multipoint inspection. My guess the tech just wrote down a random number. Now we know why I do my own oil changes, and differential/trans case oil changes.

Has anyone replaced the rear struts in a 2014 or 2015? I contacted the company recommended in the post seeking HD Struts to be prepared when my truck comes in so I dont have any issues when Installing all the Gobi parts. Right now they dont know what fits. I dont have access to the struts and cannot give them what is printed on the factory strut. Would anyone with a 14or15 post up ehat is printed on there and maybe a pic of the rear strut. i would appreciate it as well as other newer model owners.. Unless someone knows what fits the 14 or 15?

They're the same struts I have to gobi hd version on my limited. They work great lifting the tailgate with the ladder. The lift supports depot version should also work as they are less expensive alternative to gobi's.

Finally got around to ordering/buying thru lift supports depot and was told by staff person that they carry both the brand used as OEM in our truck and their house brand. She said both cost about same within few dollars and that their house brand is actually rated stronger with life time warranty. Naturally I went with their house brand and Cost was about $50/pair for my 2010 TE!
Now all I have to do is getting around to switch out my blown ones once they arrive!

Ha... was just noticing yesterday that my lift gate only goes half way up now. had the truck for only 2 months since i purchased it brand new.

i open and close it about 4-6 times a day... still, waaay to early for it to crap out. plus, i just added dynamat to the rear gate and its even harder to open now.

on a side note: if anyone hates the "tinny" sounding doors and them not fully shutting on occasion, throw some dynamat (or similar) in the doors... it makes a world of difference!

Did you ever get around to Installing these? I ordered the lift support depot version based off SoCals thread and found that they were about a 1/4" to long and wouldn't line up. So I was curious If the Gobi ones worked on yours without a hitch? Idk if Toyota changed the struts for the 14 and up Runners or what's going on.

The actual number on my struts are 6156N10

My wife's Sienna has bad struts.

1. Thanks for the link, much better price than the OEM ones I found at one of the stores after googling "Toyota parts".

2. Any quick hints on figuring out if our Sienna is under the recall? My stay-at-home wife has this thing were she 100% trusts the dealer on everything they say and leave me the credit card bill, I would like to find out surreptitiously (means sneaky).

my 2015 struts would only open gate hallway after only 2 months. once i added heavier speakers and dynamt to the gate.. it was really struggling to open.

yes the Gobi's are a touch longer. take both struts off and liftgate with open higher to allow the install.

there is definately an inch or so more open height to the gate. its great for i am 6'3. i have had no problems since the install last week. i love them!

2011 TE 46,300 mi. and both rear struts gone. Debating between Lift supports or Gobi. No ladder, should I go HD? This sucks!

Both will work , I got lift support quick , easy , got to me n 2 days ! :usa: :fencing:

I am a complete dumbass and didn't realize you need to take both stock ones off before installing the new ones, hence why my lift support depot ones didn't line up the first time. After I had a few beers the light bulb in my head went off and once I took both the old stock struts off viola the lift support depot went right on. It's amazing how drinking while wrentching makes you think better haha.

I do not know if you got the heavy duty or not, but i would give them a call and explain what you have (ladder). I got the h/d for my 02 and it will slap you in the face if not careful, i do not have a ladder though.

Just ran into this over the weekend.... literally. Smoked my dome on the corner of the rear hatch, which is about 3 inches lower than what I remember. My question is, did your struts blow all at once or did they slowly fail like mine appear to be doing? 2012 with no ladder
