Rear Liftgate Struts Blown

Pretty typical, they usually fail slowly until they can't hold the tailgate up any longer. Its been like that in all of my vehicles (Durango, Rodeo, Supra, 4runner).

And I have the HD units in mine, they will DEFINITELY smack ya in the face if you're not paying attention! And closing is usually a two-hand affair, even after having them in for a year now, and opening the back for work several times a day.

Just ran into this over the weekend.... literally. Smoked my dome on the corner of the rear hatch, which is about 3 inches lower than what I remember. My question is, did your struts blow all at once or did they slowly fail like mine appear to be doing? 2012 with no ladder

Mine failed without any warning. Other cars have always had them died slowly.
I use my hatch a lot and keep it open for hours at a time, often in very windy conditions. I would have noticed.

I recall the struts on my 2008 lift gate getting weak during the winter months here in the frozen tundra, but then recovering during the warmer times. Density of air, I concluded...

But for them not to hold up the rear at all? Nope....

My 2012 struts are getting a little weak. It pushes the door up 80% of the way, but I have to give it a little push to get up the full way. Normal wear item - not a big deal. I'll replace them soon with a heavy duty version.

I like how previous posts are mentioning mileage. A strut's longevity have nothing to do with miles - unless we are talking suspension struts. If you could track the amount of cycles, that would be one thing. All we can really go on is time (as in years of use).

FYI

When I looked up my application, it showed the HD as being a PM1062N10.
As some have discussed and are using, and confirmed fit from ST1FLER because we have similar T4R's, the 6156N10 has the same dimensions.
I called to find out the difference in these 2 part numbers and was informed the following.
This may or may not determine which ones you purchase.

PM1062N10 = Made in Turkey
6156N10 = Made in USA

I had ordered struts from Lift support depot for when my gobi came. Got the ladder on and went to put the new struts in, they do not hold the lift gate up at all! It slams down. As well it only lifts up about 2/3 of the way open.

This is what I'm using:

this is on a 2015 trail.

So on further inspection the 6156N10 labeled struts I was sent are 21.25 inches extended instead of the 22.7 that they should be as per Lift Support Depots site specs. I suppose I got a miss labeled set? Lift Support Depot's Customer service was great and they are sending me out another pair.

I had to replace mine with the Gobi storm arms (I have the rear ladder). The worked just fine,but were a little slow before that. I actually have the old ones if anyone is interested in buying them. They are just collecting dust in my garage at the moment. Send me a PM.

got replacements from Lift Support Depot for $41 shipped. great customer service and support including link to installation video. 2 minutes to replace.

Folks - I'm new here haven't posted much but have learned a ton of stuff on the site - thanks to all.....

As for Lift Support Depot - I can't say enough good things about them - I have a 2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail with a Gobi Ladder and ordered Part#49124 244LB Force 22.7" Extended 15.45" Collapsed. I exchanged a few emails and they updated my order with a new part number - PM3489.

Shipped and arrived fast with an email describing the installation. Of course I screwed up the simple install - lost the spring clip on one of the struts. Reached out to Lift Support Depot and within days received a set of clip, no questions asked and no charges. I highly recommend them and again thank the folks on this site for steering me in their direction.....

Running a baja ladder+rotopax on the back. Swapped with these and BAM it feels like stock Install took 1minute each side. Use a small flathead to pry off the retaining clips, remove shock, replace with new - Done.

I have a 2012 Limited. Just hit 90K and the rear liftgate struts are not fully doing their job...open to about 75% and then I have to push the liftgate the rest of the way up.

While getting an oil change this week, I inquired about getting them replaced. Quote was around $400 installed at the dealer, but fortunately the replacement is covered by my Toyota Ext Wty. So I should be good for another 90K...the ext. wty has saved me a couple of times on repairs.

The dealer rates for this are an absolute joke. $400 for a 5 minute job (literally)with parts that can be had for under $30. If anyone here has to replace them out of warranty, avoid the dealer like the plague. Dealer shenanigans like this make me sick.

I just ordered replacement struts for my '13 Ltd w/ 62K. Interesting that the struts seemed to go bad quickly. Not very Toyota like... Total incl delivery was $271.
