Rear Window Button - Help

Hey all,

I'm wondering if someone could help me on this one.
Does the third gen. rear window button on the dash have a lightbulb behind it to illuminate it at night. I can't remember if this was ever lighted or not.

If so, how do you get to the bulb to replace it?


Another question is:
I've always wondered what that "shhhhh...click " noise is under the right front area of the hood is occasionally. Or, it sounds like it could be coming from that area anyway.

Why would the brake booster hiss by itself?

If the sound is like a bug buzzing or somethign every few seconds it's the charcoal canister.
edit: only heard if the vehicle if off. I dunno if he mena t when it is running or not.
 
Upon further review, my rear window button does light up. I only get that noise when I get on the brakes, and then only about every 3 to 5 times I stop.

"It is the hydraulic brake booster pump. It was introduced in 2001 on the 4runner and in 2000 in the Land Cruiser. It replaces the vacuum boost system used before. When the hydaulic brake fluid pressure drops below one threshold, the pump turns on until the pressure is above another threshold, then it turns off when a relay closes which is the loud thwhack you hear.

It's still there in the 4th gen T4R but quieter. The other thing you might notice is a slight vibration in the brake pedal when the pump operates - also normal."

That was a quote from the second link in my first post, it sure seems consistent with the noise I get.

Hey all,

Appreciate all the responses and help. Makes sense that it is lighted for some late night venting out the back. :biggrin2:

Does anyone know how to get to that bulb? I know I'll break something if I just go at it blindly, so I'd rather know the proper procedure.

And thank you for the responses to the SHHH-CLICK. Or was that Shhh - CLUNK ! Anyway, now I can tell my passengers it is the Hybrid pump kicking in some bio-fuel. How does that sound?
 
Bulb Removal and Replacement

Can anyone tell me where the screws are to remove the front radio panel, etc., - - so I can get to the bulb for the rear window button ?
 
I tried to get that rear window light as well, the parts dept nor anyone in the service department had seen the light bulb before. Im still trying to find a junkyard that has a 4Runner.
 
Lightbulb

My suspicion is that it is the same bulb that is used above the ash tray and in the glove box. Those, I'm familiar with.

I'm one of those people that hates to see a light bulb out and have to replace it. :biggrin2:

Not sure what you mean...do you mean on the radio itself or the entire front panel that surrounds everything?


For example, is the piece you're trying to remove the one I have removed from this pic? If you're talking about the radio itself, sorry I cannot be of any help...

I'll try to explain:
Whatever ir takes to get to the bulb behind the rear window button. I don't see the front panel in your photo. So maybe it is within that panel. How is the front panel removed? i.e., clips or screws, sliding in one direction or another.

Since the rear window button is within the entire front panel, you'll need to remove the panel first to get to the switch.

The panel is held on by clips (notice a few of the big tabs in my picture where the panel clips to). First, remove the panel surrounding the shifter. Should be a screw on either side and some clips. Once you have that removed, just lay it over to the side. The front panel is now ready to be removed. I start by first pulling the panel from the bottom towards the shifter and slowly working my way up it to detach the clips from the dash. You'll find it's held in place very tight, so you'll have to put some force behind it to remove it. Just be patient and take your time.

You'll have a few wires running from behind the dash to areas of the panel to power certain functions. Once the panel is unclipped from the dash, reach behind the panel and unplug your wires. Once done, just work the panel around the shifter to remove it.

To reinstall everything, just go in reverse order.

This is what I was looking for. A guy that's had this front panel removed before. I've only had my Toy for a year and haven't had to get into this area yet. Your process description is very helpful for me to get a start without scratching my head and breaking something. I would have been hunting for screws to loosen up the front panel. Is it easier than it looks? Kinda messy looking.

No problem, glad I could help.

Yes, it's a lot easier than it looks. The two white looking wires coming out of the area where the radio sits, actually plug into the back of the radio...so you will not see those unless you remove your radio too. Secondly, the wiring you see bundled up on the passenger's side floormat is not oem wiring...it's aftermarket speaker wire I was getting ready to add.

You'll be surprised how easy it is to remove the panel, once you've done it. I've removed this panel at least 2 dozen times or more just in the past year tinkering around w/ stereo modifications.

Oh and good luck on the bulb you're wanting to replace...wish I had more info on doing that, but I've yet to change out any bulbs in the dash.
