Rear window Gremlin?

Came back to my '15 TE today, after a brief stop at a store, and found the back window all the way down ...... It is raining heavily!
Happened twice more! Stuff in the back now thoroughly wet. Obviously a problem from a security point of view as well.

Finally figured it out. The window will operate without the key in the ignition, and Meesha, my Australian Shepherd, is stepping on the button when she crosses over the centre console to get to my seat. (Any dog person knows that the masters' seat is the preferred choice when the master is away from the vehicle!)

Temporary solution - stuff something under the end of the rear window button, preventing it from depressing.

Anyone have a better, more permanent solution? Can Toyota re-program it so that button is inactive when the ignition is dead?
This is cute, but not funny in the long run - don't want anyone stealing my best pal!

I believe the window switches (all of them) only work with the key off until you open a door? At least that's how mine work on my '13 SR5: Key out with door closed and windows still work for 30 seconds or so. Open a door after key removed from ignition and all windows quit working.

Have you done any other wiring mods that might affect this expected behavior somehow? Does your rear window still roll down after 30 seconds or more of the key being removed from the ignition?

I also believe the master "Window Lock" on the driver's side affects the rear window control as well (don't quote me on that!).

window lock button?
on previous models, it locks out all but the drivers window, including the rear window.


I am surprised tho, that the window works without the key on.

I will have to check out if the windows stop functioning after a given time interval. I hope I don't have to perform some magical ritual, like, remove key from ignition - exit vehicle - close door - open door - close and lock - spin around three times and touch my nose to the rear bumper!

I will also try the window lock button, but that is not real user friendly, if I have to press the door lock AND the window lock button, and then again when I get back in. What will happen is that every time I try to open a window, I will discover that I forgot to re-activate the windows ......... every time!

I'll try it out tomorrow.

Like the others have said, window lock button is probably your best bet.

Hi Raven,

You could install a "Defeat" (master switch) button very easily! All you would need to do is access the tailgate switch from inside of the upper console. The idea is to 'interrupt' the console button with another button by wiring it "in series" What this means is: when your pouch steps on the tailgate button, that switch won't work because your new safety switch has to be in the "on position" first; which is located anywhere he/she can't accidentally step on it! It's real easy to do if you think that's a good idea!

Thanks Rigtec! Rigging a bypass switch in the window circuit would be a fairly simple solution.
I might have to wire a few other circuits to a master switch. Last night as I was driving home, I suddenly realized my butt was getting mighty hot! My little gal had activated both seat heaters!

I am thinking perhaps a simple wooden cover over the console centre might be a viable option.

Just get one of those little rubber mats that people use to lay their phones on to keep it from sliding around. They are thick enough to keep paws from moving the switch and you can move it when you want to use the switch. The switch can only be used for a short time once the key is turned off and then it becomes inactive.

Or, you can teach your dog to stay in the backseat like I did.

Meesha would not approve of your suggestion that she stay in the back! She is my travelling buddy - always with me. (and for her, being relegated to the back seat does not qualify as "being with me".)

I don't see the problem here. None of my windows work without the vehicle in the on position. They will for a few minutes after shutting off, but then are disabled when you open the door.
