Howdy folks.
I bought my first 4Runner this week. It's a '92 with 167k on the body and 35k on the engine. It's in really nice shape cosmetically and runs smooth. One of the few issues is that the tailgate window isn't working. I found that the rubber coupler inside of the motor was messed up, so the motor would run but wouldn't turn the gear. I took the motor apart and found a rubber coupler that rests on the gear and is held in by three rubber tangs that stick out. Those tangs were bent funny and torn. Upon investigating the system, I found that once the window is rolled up all the way the motor will still run, which explains why the coupler is messed up. I picked up a remanned motor from Napa yesterday but I don't want to rip it apart too. Shouldn't the limit switch kill the motor when the window becomes fully closed? I tested the limit switch on its own and it works as it should. Could the relay possibly have corrosion that is completing the limit circuit? That's all I can think of at this point.
For what it's worth, I've noticed a similar situation with the sunroof, though it is in working condition. When the roof is closed the motor will still run if you continue to press the close button. Is that normal?
