Recomended suggestions for replacing stock speakers?

Looking for some help on what speakers I should look at to replace the speakers on the base stereo system of an '04 4-runner. Saw some adapter plates and such.... any suggestions appreciated!

Do you think the problem is the stereo unit itself or the speakers. I turned the bass completely off and cranked the treble to the highest and it helps a bit. Still very bassy and muffled as you obiously know. Let me know what fix you do come up with. Thanks, Randy
 
The radio seems to have sufficient power, it can crank up the stock speakers no problem.

I've installed a handful of aftermarket systems...have some background in this stuff. It definately is the cheap-O speakers that are used.
 
Scott- being a novice....once you figure out which speakers to get, do you just pop the grills off or do the whole door panels need to be removed, or am I best just going to a stereo place to have it done. I am pretty handy---thanks
 
It's not the hardest thing to do, but it takes patience and some mechanical skills. Have to remove the door panel, may have to come up or buy an adapter to install the aftermarket speaker as well. Places like Crutchfield will supply you with wire harnesses and instructions. If it's your first time, you are best off either having someone else do it, or purchase from a place like crutchfield where they offer instructions and technical assistance if you need it.
 
4th Generation speaker installation

I found this guy's website to be informative. It shows how to take off the door panels and make some custom speaker spacers with MDF. I'm not crazy about his wiring skills, but it sure is nice to have the OEM shop manual page scans to R&R the door panels.
