Recurring white mark on rear window

About a month or so after I got my '06, I noticed that when I rolled my rear window down a white mark about 3 inches from the passenger side would appear on the inside of the glass from top to bottom. Now, the mark comes off with a little windex and elbow grease but about 3 roll downs later it comes back.

Could there be something inside the doorframe causing that? Has anyone heard of this before? I didn't see it after searching. Am I doomed to a lifetime of white streak on the window?

Any suggestions?

Something is rubbing on the window from inside the lift gate. You need take it to stealer under warranty. This rubbing could damage the rear window defogger. You also should not use Windex on the defogger lines/wires.

I agree with Koz. Do not use windex on tinted windows either. The windows will get bubbles.

not so much bubbles but it will purple your tint.

also stoners glass cleaner is awesome, and some people suggest cleaning with newspaper, depite the ink that will get on your hands

i have this

Yes, as soon as i got my 4runner, i put my alumni sticker on the rear glass... i never use the defogger anyway out here. Sure enough, the first time i rolled it down, it didn't go in smoothly and one of the corners of the sticker folded up. It came back up with some kind of grease on it, and now, just as you all describe i get a streak of that grease on the window. It's diminished over time, and i figure a few more weeks of up and down and wiping off it will be all but gone. Doesn't really bother me anymore, only notice it at night when there's a car behind me.

White mark

I also had a recurring white mark on my driver's side window. I figured it was something rubbing on the window from within. It eventually wore the surface of the class to look etched. Fortunately the streak was not in a bad place, and I just deal with it.

I have aways used newsprint to clean my windows. Don't mind washing my hands of the ink afterward.

It is probably white lithium grease for the scissor mechanism. Obviously an excessive amount or something bent too much towards the window. The lift gate skin will need to be removed to rectify.

I never had that problem with my '05....but I hardly ever open the rear window. As for cleaning, I have never had a problem using Windex and newspaper on any auto glass.

Went and got the Stoner. The aerosol spray is a little easier to control versus a liquid like Windex. And it evaporates very nicely without streaks. I'm wiping it off with a microfiber glass cloth. Thanks guys!

this is crazy!!!

i saw this thread yesterday and thought how annoying it would be to have this happen.

on the way home from work i noticed a big white stripe on my back window, about 10 inches from the driver's side. i couldn't believe it. it was a thick white oily substance.

on the way to work this morning a was putting up my driver's side window and, voila, another freakin' stripe. what the heck?!?!?!?

if you bring yours to the dealer, please send me an update so that i can be somewhat informed when going to my dealer. i do not feel like having this "etched" onto my window.
