Remote start question

My brother and I both have 2016 4R limited that are almost identical. His came with the remote start option and mine did not. We both have the same type of smart key fobs but my 4R is missing some part to activate the remote start feature.
Does anyone know what I need to get the remote working?

This is just my suspicion but I suspect the wiring harness is already wired for remote start and this could be as simple as adding a module or programming at the dealer.

You are missing the entire remote start system. Yes the wiring is there but you need the kit from either Toyota or aftermarket.

Yes, it does shut down when the door is opened however wouldn't this be an Anti Theft feature that allows me to warm the engine and defrost the windows but does not allow a bad guy to drive off with my vehicle?

Get an aftermarket remote start. I added a Compustar remote starter. Works up to 2000 feet away. I can start my car from my office inside of my building. $350 installed. The factory remote start sucks.

Does the Compustar require a second remote fob or does it integrate to the factory fob?

It's something with the smart key system where it has to swap over to the fob you are carrying around with you. Could still be related to anti-theft I guess. The G key doesn't not kill the engine when you get in unless you hit the brake before inserting your hard key.

[MENTION=133968]GaryL[/MENTION] I also have an aftermarket remote start. I negotiated it at time of sale, and the dealer handled installation. From the paperwork I saw, it looked like they also would normally charge around $350, and I have a little peace of mind about the dealership not being able to blame any possible future electrical or startup issues on the aftermarket unit. There is no extra controller; I just press the existing lock button on my Toyota key 3x in a row to activate it. I don't use it too often, but yeah, it's nice when it's 18 degrees outside in the morning.

Even if the aftermarket option requires a separate fob, it's not so bad. Dump the bulky Toyota keys with buttons in a drawer and use the much smaller rubberized valet key as your carry with the aftermarket fob. I'd much rather have a more capable aftermarket fob with better range than a fancy oversized key. (Not applicable for those fancy over-electronified Limiteds)

Thanks El Dusty. That goes along the lines I was thinking. Just a module that reports the start function to the vehicles computer to start the engine. I looked at the OEM kits and the installation by the dealer and they want right around $450 installed. The OEM kit has a bunch of other parts and brackets I have no clue what they are needed for. My 4R sits right outside my front window about 20 feet away. I would want the engine to shut off if the door was opened and it was not me opening it. I use the remote start on those zero degree days when I have an inch of ice needing to be scraped off the windshield.

It’s a second fob but it’s very small and fits easily on your keychain. It far outperforms the factory system and it’s less expensive. The range on the factory system is not very good. I’m sure you have some local shops that will have many options. I used a local auto sound and electronics shop that had a ton of options. Visit a few shops and check out the different options and prices before you make a decision.

I also just bought the Accessorides kit for my Limited for $170. I always start my car early in the morning and its nice to get into a car thats warm and defrosted even if it kills the car when I open the door.
 
FWIW. I had the pre installed factory remote start when I bought my runner and I hated it. I actually negotiated to lower the price of the vehicle because of the factory remote start and they agreed that it was also a POS. I now have a Compustar remote start and alarm system and it is so much more functional. Plus the range is so much better. I would actually recommend you contact gshadow325 who is active here on the forums if you are going to decide if you want an aftermarket system. I got my Compustar from him and he walked me through the whole process of what I was looking for and the install.

The factory remote start does what it is supposed to do. But I just hated the fact that it would shut your engine off when you unlock and open the door. I understand that is the anti theft function. But with any decent aftermarket option, it will keep your engine running even if you unlock your door. Your engine will only turn off if you don't have your key in the ignition and step on the brake. At least thats how the anti theft function works with the Compustar in my 4Runner, and thats how it works in my wifes vehicle with a Viper system.

Edit: Sorry. I just noticed you have a Limited. So I don't really know how an aftermarket system would work with the smartkeys and push to start.

In some places you can get a ticket for a vehicle running unattended due to so many thefts. This is usually evident in winter with people wanting to warm things up before they drive away. I don't think the law cares (at least in my area) wether you have some kind of remote system or not.

That is leaving the keys in the ignition and running. It does not perrtain to remote starters because there are no keys in vehiocle to drive away with.

Yhe OP has a Limited, the engine will shut down with door open and he will need to restart it, OEM or aftermarket.

There are aftermarket solutions out there to allow just OEM keyfob start. ALCA or DBALL as a stand alone solution installed by professionals. There are also tharness solutions out there too.

Really? You get a ticket for using a remote start in Kansas??? Damn cold there in the winter too!
