Remote Start

I went with aftermarket Audiovox from dealer. Picked it up yesterday. They said I would have to use the original key fob that came with the vehicle to unlock and lock the vehicle to wake the vehicle, then press the fob 2 times to start. To unlock the vehicle press and hold the fob for a few seconds and the doors unlock. I could only get one fob to work this am, they probably did not program the other fob. I will check this out later. On my 4th Gen I had one installed by a local shop, compustar I think. This had a module, extra $$, that did not require the extra step of using the original key to "wake the vehicle". I guess they did not want to spend the extra $$ for the module. This will also affect the range due to the distance that the original key signal travels which cannot be that far. Anyone have any experience with this?

That sounds like a nightmare in the making. Good luck. It's a damn shame Toyota cocked up in the remote start area. Almost standard equipment on most cars nowadays, and a door open kill switch is not the industry norm. :AK47:

I would recommend aftermarket for a few reasons. Depending on the system you get you may also get a security system with it, you get more range out of the remote and if the system is two way you get a response when the car has started or if someone touches it. Couldn't agree more. I have the Viper 5501 with the same remote and couldn't be happier. Back in my University days, I put a remote start add-on module on my 3rd gen but range and the keyless not working once the truck started bothered me.

Aftermarket systems do so much so well, so that's always where I'd go unless it comes factory installed like some of our GM's. Dealer installed usually means they farm out the work (if you're lucky!!), so using a trusted installer with a reputable remote start brand is what we normally do.
