Remote Start

what system did you buy?
where is the master install manual?

Crimestopper (SP-402). IIRC they include the install manuals in the box like a normally-functioning company and I think they're online as well. Been a while since I did my last car but I remember it being insanely easy to wire up and working on the first try, much to my surprise.

maybe you need to hook up the key sense wire to detect a key in the ignition since you don't have a bypass module.

use a fortin key-override-all. its only 30-50 bucks. thats a decent bypass

What is the key sense wire supposed to do? I guess the car wants to be notified when the key is in the ignition barrel on all key positions and the key sense accomplishes that?

I'll order a bypass if zip-tying a key up by the antenna doesn't work--though I don't see why it wouldn't. Isn't the purpose of a bypass just to avoid someone being able to hotwire your car? I'm not worried about that at all I live out in the middle of the forest down a very intimidating driveway.

i used this as my guide.
https://images.idatalink.com/ve...once from IGN to ACC. So what is IGN2 doing?

I'm pretty sure this is the one mine uses, it came with the system. You have to program it but it was pretty simple and I've never had an issue with it.

I have the kit below except with a 2 Way fob and 5 button fob. They don't seem to have the 2way fob anymore but I see it listed in the details so maybe you have to ask. If I recall, the keysense thing is a wired loop around the key. You attach the Fortin box to the loop which reads the key as you cycle the ignition and copies the code to the box. The box then sends that signal when the remote starter tells it to, that makes the car think the key is there.

I believe I still have a schematic that I could post here if that is helpful.

I think the 2nd ignition is needed for things like the heater.

Whoa. this kit was sold out globally like a week ago I looked everywhere for it. Interestingly, zooming in on the pic it looks like the main module is the same housing as the Crimestopper unit I ordered..

Crimestopper and Fortin are my go to units. Never had an issue with any of them. Had them in my last 5 cars, one we had for a decade until the car rusted out.

Yeah I was extremely happy with my Crimestopper unit in my last car with the one exception being the remote sucked; it had a little sliding tab that covered up the start button but it had no tension to hold it in place at all and thus didn't work to protect the start button....it additionally didn't work to protect the start button because you could just press on the cover itself and the button would actuate. This was on a manual transmission car so I just made sure to be extremely careful to leave it in neutral. I did test it once and yes the car did drive forward if left in gear.

Lol.

But aside from that it was rock solid and did everything I wanted it to do and nothing I didn't want. The unit I ordered has a totally different remote design so hopefully the design is a little more thoughtful.

Ah, I've seen the sliding door ones, not a fan. The ones we have you hold the button down until the light flashes. My wife's van has the single button like in the link below. Like I mentioned earlier, it's small enough to be non-intrusive. I could have had it run off the Sienna fob but you'd have to be close for it to work. She likes to start the van from inside her office. :)

Update this thread if you'd like me to grab a scan of what I have for info.

what exactly is hooked up? any starter kill hooked up too? you might have that backwards?

you might be able to put your key by the ignition to detect the transponder, but i would direct wire that fortin key override all to the required wires. (power + ground + ground while running + the required connection to the tansponder) much more stable then the old ring, you might be able to use the data port for the brain to bypass connection, instead of the traditional 3 wire hook up earlier. i used a directed brand (xk05) before and it never worked right for me but that old (dei 555u always worked), so i switch it out for that fortin to keep the key, if you use idatalink brand, you need that adapter to program. when i upgraded to the newer compustar unit, i went all out with the idatalink blade.
hope you hook up all the ignition 1 and 2 wires pink white on your brain needs to be programmed to ignition 2 , pink go to ignition 1. also gray to acc , your positives should be able to connect together. have a good ground. brown to starter

EXCELLENT resources, thanks. These didn't come up in my searching.

Read both, so far no surprises except I'm a little unclear about the IGN2 referenced in the first guide but it doesn't seem to be in the second.

My understanding of the 4runner is the start sequence is:
- ACC (key in and turned to the right 1 click)
- STARTER (key in and turned to the right another click)
- IGN (key backs off from STARTER and lands here)

Then to kill the engine you turn the key left once from IGN to ACC.

So what is IGN2 doing?

im confused, first you say you have a viper system, now its a crime stopper.

of course your not going to get any support from the company themselves, its the same for the major brands, thats why it pays to go to authorized dealers. lifetime support for their installations.

but some of us are knowledgeable to help each other out, the guide i shared is very nice to use. tells you detailed enough. but when you have the dealer access, its even more detailed. you can also pay a small fee for pictures from wirecolor.

Got the crimestopper in and wired up. EZPZ except I think the antenna is doa on my unit. It's just acting like it doesn't get anything from either remote. I tried the programming process:

> Turn key on
> Press programming/valet button 4x
*parking lights flash 4x*
*unit LED turns ON*
> Press lock button on remote
*nothing happens*

What should be happening is the indicator LED should blink, and then you hit lock on the second remote, then you turn the key off and you're done. Due to the fact that it's responding normally except for the fact that it doesn't react to the remote I'm thinking the antenna is bad. The remotes light up when you press buttons and otherwise seem intact. Unit seems fully functional otherwise. I checked and re-checked the antenna connections and nothing looks out of sorts...

Nah this is a problem of their own creation. If they don't want to support their product to non-dealers, which is strange but certainly their prerogative, they shouldn't be running an amazon store and distributing their units to retail.

key in on position is different from vehicle is started.
i dont think any led suppose to be on.
once you get the 4 flashes. you hit lock on all remotes that need to program.

if you are using 2way remotes, you need to change the settings at the brain to detect that.

im looking at your install manual.
hopefully you have everything plugged in correctly.

hope you did all the wires right, the brain need too sense the ignition 1 wire, so make sure its hooked up . also ignition 2 wire need to be hook up for other stuff that need to be turned on the vehicle.
here is another guide

Right. I'm turning the key on but not starting the car.

Manual doesn't say.

Right. I'm doing that and get the four flashes, and then hit lock on a remote and nothing happens. The reason I tried programming them at all in the first place is right out of the box it seemed like the unit wasn't responding to the remotes at all.

if you are using 2way remotes, you need to change the settings at the brain to detect that.

1-way remotes.

hopefully you have everything plugged in correctly.

Right now I have the basics hooked up (ACC / IGN / STARTER / GND / both 12V+) I would expect this would be enough to get the unit to program and respond to remotes. I've also confirmed that ACC, both 12V+ and GND are available at the unit harnesses using my multimeter.

Since it does in fact enter programming mode, I'm thinking the issue is with the antenna or antenna circuitry.

here is another guide

Thanks, I'm going to go out and re-check my wiring, however I'm still leaning towards a problem with the antenna just based on how the unit seems to be completely unresponsive towards the remotes.

Okay, re-checked my wiring and for the following:

ACC (White/Green on 4runner ignition harness)
IGN (Black/Red on 4runner ignition harness)
IGN2 (Blue/Yellow on 4runner ignition harness)
START (Green/Black on 4runner ignition harness)
12V+ (two of these) (Both connected to Red on 4runner ignition harness)

matches exactly to what that last guide posted shows.

That said, the only ones that should matter are 12V+, GND, and ACC as far as programming remotes goes.

I'm like 90% certain there is a factory defect in the antenna on this thing.

If anyone here has ideas I'll gladly test them out, and I have an email into Crimestopper to see if they have any suggestions but at the moment I am out of things to try, all signs seem to indicate a problem with the antenna or associated circuitry internal to the unit.

(And I've also checked and re-checked the antenna wire connection, port location, etc.)

(Also I just got done trying a factory reset of the unit and also configured 1-way remotes in the settings, twice)

hope that antenna wire didn't get damaged. if everything is wired correctly.

did you happen to check both the 12v fuse at the brain?

did you happen to check both the 12v fuse at the brain?

Yep. Checked all connections at the unit harnesses with my meter.

I went ahead and ordered another unit. I'm like 999999.9999% sure the issue is with the antenna or perhaps antenna pcb traces inside the unit.

I'll find out in a couple days I guess.

I know you said you checked the connections multiple times but this sounds familiar for some reason. Like maybe the connector fits in 2 spots on the Crimestopper unit but only one is the correct one. I also have a thought that I had to repair the antenna wire on one I did as a wire broke near the connector or wasn't crimped well. Or maybe my brain is making things up. :D

I mean, the unit gets power, acts like it gets power, responds to programming, and enters remote programming mode. It's hard to imagine how I might have made a mistake with wiring it up. I did check and re-check all relevant harness connections against the diagram though just to be sure.

I'll have the new unit in a day or two and can test it out.

Sorry, I should have been more specific, I only mean the antenna wire. For some reason I recall that 4pin(?) connector fitting in 2 locations. One on one side of the unit and one on the other side.

Wellllllllllllllllllllll you guys are NOT gonna believe this. New unit has the exact same problem. totally unresponsive from the remotes. I have re-checked and checked all the wiring and I am 100000000000000% positive everything is correct. I even tried hooking up power and checking the lock/unlock feature for the 0.5s unlock pulse using my meter before doing anything else, no response.

I think they have a bad batch of these units.

where did you ground the unit too? i did mines directly to the crash bar.

show us some pics of the install. shiet happens.
