Remote starter questions.

I've wanted a remote start for years now, but just never got it done. Well, 2013 is my year! A couple of quick questions...

1. Is there an OEM unit available that is plug and play? (I'm pretty sure that my '97 SR5 has remote locks, but I've never had a fob for them if that makes any difference...)

2. If #1 is not a viable option, how hard are these systems to install and what system do you have experience with/recommend?

3. I saw an Amazon local deal for a remote start system installed for $129.00, should I just buy that and be done with it? (It gives me the willies to allow people I don't know to diddle my truck)

I can't comment on if there was ever an OEM remote start system for our vehicles... But I can say that my Viper Remote starter is awesome. I've got it on the Runner (+/-1.5 year ago), and had it installed on my father's truck (6 months ago) and my previous truck (+/-3 years ago). All of them are all running and batteries are all still good with alot of use. I got it done each time at the same place that offers a free install with the purchase, so I never got to see how they were intalled. And getting the medium grade system for $200, it was a no-brainier for me.

Look for anything made by DEI...Viper, Avital are a couple they make. They tend to be the best out there. I did a similar deal to that Amazon one, a groupon for $125 installed for an Avital 4300. Its been close to 2 years and no problems. I love it. I use it all year round, warm up in the winter and cool down in the summer.

1. There was a company around that made PnP harness for alarms and remote starters. They are long gone now though. No OEM unit, closest you could get was port/dealer installed.

2. If you have little to no experience with 12V systems, get someone who does. You run the risk of: Electrical fire, blowing the air bags, damaging vehicle electronics....

3. Can't speak on the Amazon deal, but I'd rather see someone with experience put in a remote starter.

FWIW, I've had the same CompuStar two-way alarm/remote starter in my '99 for 10 years without a problem.

97 was pre factory remote start so it will not have a factory option for RS. That being said the best option is to have an authorized car audio/ alarm shop install one. Directed Electronics is the leader in alarms and own a lot of the big name companies (Viper, Avatal, Clifford, Ect.) AutoPage also makes great alarms as well as remote starters. As does Scytec. The more generic/no name the alarm/RS combo the more problems you will have with it. Best recomendation is to go with a big name and pay a tad bit more but have a better quality product.
MOST shops will not sell an alarm/RS without installing it because they can loose their contract with the alarm companies. Especially with RS systems there is an inherent liability in installing those and if not done properly could result in damage to your vehicle, someone elses property, or even injury or death. (a little extreme i know but if not installed properly and vehicle is left in gear it WILL hop until it finds neutral or a wall, or car, Ect.) Being a professional installer for almost 20 years I could never recomend someone who has never installed one to jump on it, I do them all the time and still hate to undertake them because they can be wiring nightmares.

DEI remote start for 4+ years and never had a problem
