Great work taking out the rear tray!! I have only one thing that won't fit into my 4runner with the tray in. My beer kegorator is about 1 inch too tall...i move it twice a year to and from our summer cottage.
I use the slide out tray for my audio recording equipment, it works perfectly. I don't need to bend over and push the equipment across the carpet. I just pull out the tray and load the gear on. This was a major plus when deciding to purchase this vehicle. I also do a lot of renovations on my apartment buildings. I can put all of my tools on the tray and slide it back in. I LOVE IT!!!!

Hmm, this is a good question. I'd be interested to know what the difference (in inches) is in the height of floor to ceiling in SR5 without 3rd row compared to Limited with folded down 3rd row.
I would assume, like ckon, that the load floor is higher than in an SR5, but i wonder by how many inches. anyone with the aforementioned vehicles care to take measurements?:bluejump:
My guess is 4 to 6" higher in the 3rd row equipped models.

If you compare the auxiliary ports and vents on the right side, you can see that there is quite a difference in the floor height. Mine is coming without a tray or 3rd row, so I have the deepest possible cargo area, but the load floor is not totally flat w/ the 2nd row laid down. Can't have it all, I suppose.

It appears that there are three load floor heights: SR5 being the lowest, the pull-out tray being somewhere in the middle and third-row seats being highest with a four to six inch range from lowest to highest. The SR5 is a little below the sill plate. I just measured my pull-out and it's 3.25 inches above the sill. Maybe someone can measure the third-row height above the sill plate.

If you remove the tray is there something that needs to be added to get back to 'stock'?
I'll be getting a TE soon and there is no option to not get the tray, so I'll have to take it out. And I'm hoping there is something that goes down to make it look more finished.
harper, you are always quick with the parts book, is there something they remove to add the tray to a SR5 that doesn't come with it (tray or carpet or cover of some sort)? Something I could get from the dealer?

what is the height in inches in an SR5 (without 3rd row) from the cargo floor to the ceiling?
my dogs are 41" tall (when standing) from paws to upright ears and i'm wondering if their heads/ears will hit the ceiling (and thus caking dog hair onto the headliner which is difficult to remove)??

All custom work by me.
It is just a cheap dock that I bought on ebay for 7-8 bucks and then I gutted it for the plastic dock.
I took it all apart and then first used a ball grinder to make it bigger where the phone sits down so my iphone fits with the Seidio case on.
I hated taking it out of the case to put on a dock!
Then I used a white oem apple cable and ran it up underneath thru the cheap dock bottom and connected it to my phone.
Set the phone connected to the cable on the dock upside down and put a couple of small dabs of epoxy to locate it.
Then took the phone off and really epoxied the apple cable it in place from underneath the dock.
At this point I cut a hole in the car compartment where you see it the exact height and width of the dock with a hot knife( I actually use a cheap soldering iron that I sharpened a knife edge on),cuts abs plastics like butter.
Slid it in the cutout and use the old screw holes on the bottom of the dock to attach it and then wired it up and under the to the usb in the glovebox.

So what is the problem with the sliding tray? I don't have a 4Runner, but am considering one and when I saw it at the car show it seemed like a pretty good idea, especially for my wife who is 5'1".
Do you just lose some of the storage space in the back?

Nothing wrong with it for me. I kinda like it ,now that I'm used to it.Some people have complained that it waste a little cargo room height and that dirt and stuff can collect up underneath it.

Where'd you get the carpet to match? How did you secure the carpet in place (or did you)?
I really like this mod as I do not like the tray at all. It takes up space, and I normally keep a bag of stuff in the cargo area just behind the seats. Whenever I pull the tray forward, my gear bag falls into the hole.

I used Harper's instructions to remove mine. When I got to the felt like cover over the metal with the sensors, I stopped. According to a Toyota technician, the sensors may be roll over sensors. I covered the entire back area, behind the front seat, with a heavy-duty rubber bed liner that was intended for the back of pickups. One should be very careful about protecting the sensors. My primary reason to remove the tray as to gain several inches of vertical space for two weeks of outdoor gear, clothing etc.
However, I don't plan to reinstall the tray for day to day use.
On top of rubber bed liner, I placed in-door/outdoor carpet and a washable rug for my GSD. Put kiddie/doggie barriers between front seat and rear area as well as between the backseat area and cargo area. This kept the bags in the back from sliding on my GSD.
I'm looking for an inexpensive cover for the area where the tray used to be and hope to come up with it soon. Probably be a do-it-yourself project.

Curious to what that sensor is ? BFLAN said his SR5 did'nt have it when he took his tray out , so I don't think it's a rollover sensor. SR5's should have roll over sensors too I would think.
I saw some other sensors besides the yaw one under the center console too .Do you see any part numbers on the one in the back so we can look it up or else I'll look for numbers next time mine is out.We did'nt have the parts manual access back then.
I guess I could look it up in the repair manual.
I got the carpet from a local upholstery shop. Just picked out the black that matched the best. I first put down that thick grey padding/carpet liner that you find a lot of times under automotive carpet. Used 3M spray adhesive to secure everything. Its been a while and I have 15k on my 4runner, no problems so far. My dog just hated the slider, dont know why, plus it made it that much higher for him to get into the car. That is the main reason I got rid of mine, plus I saw no need for it, was useless for me.
